Boxing’s Fighter of the Year – live on SuperSport

Last July, Carl Frampton travelled from Belfast in Northern Ireland to New York for the fight of his life against undefeated Leo Santa Cruz.

Against most expectations, “The Jackal” upset the WBA featherweight champion with a performance as clinical as it was sensational. Six months later, Ring magazine and a host of influential websites named Frampton Fighter of the Year for 2016.

It was a singular honour and paid due homage to the majesty of his success that night.

This weekend, the pair resume their rivalry, this time under the bright lights of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The action will be broadcast live on SuperSport 5 from 4.30am on Sunday.

The famous casino town is an appropriate setting for two of the best featherweights in boxing and the assumption is that they will again produce a spectacular reenactment of their first fight.

Santa Cruz, a three-weight world champion, claims to have made significant adjustments in the build-up. He also had to cope with his father battling cancer, fortunately now in remission.

If the view is that the dangerous Mexican can get better, so too Frampton. Although he fought like a demon that night, he concedes that he made many mistakes. He intends to produce an even better account of himself.

If it’s true that styles make fights, fans could be set for another mini-war. Frampton is bound to be pumped with confidence and as the champion, he is the man. But Santa Cruz will come hard and will force him into the fight of his life.

The MGM has hosted some classics over the years. The smart betting is another one being in store for this weekend.
