Mighty Mchunu back in the mix

Thabiso Mchunu is back in the spotlight after his comprehensive beatdown of Johnny Muller last weekend.

The slick-boxing cruiserweight has been appointed as the mandatory challenger to current WBC International champion Bejenaru Constantin, who is rated 14th.

Their promoters have until July 16 to reach an amicable agreement. Failure to do so will see the fight go to purse bids. In that case, the WBC HQ will circulate terms and the deadline to both parties.

“I’m very confident of being successful,” said Rodney Berman. “If we can’t reach terms, we’ll go the purse bid route. If Constantin’s camp baulk, Youri Kalenga is waiting in the wings. He and Thabiso could then contest the vacant International belt.”

New York-based Constantin is unbeaten in 12 fights, but has not fought at anything approaching the level of Mchunu, who has been matched tough in recent years.

Golden Gloves is now handily placed in the cruiserweights with Kevin Lerena rated by all four organisations, including second by the WBO, and Mchunu making his way back after showing encouraging form against Muller.
