Mchunu going back to his place in the sun

Thabiso Mchunu: back on track.

A rejuvenated Thabiso Mchunu will return to one of his favourite stomping grounds, the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, for another crack at the US market towards year’s end.

It was at this same venue four years ago when he produced a sublime performance against Eddie Chambers, putting him on the road to an international career. There have been a few bumps on that road since, but he’s making his way again and looking far better for it.

On the same Star Boxing bill, promoter Rodney Berman is arranging for SA welterweight champion Thulani Mbenge to appear on the undercard. Berman is looking for a slow-burner to introduce Mbenge to the American press, favouring a low-key off-TV debut in the US.

“It’s a very discerning market,” said Berman. “We won’t go there shouting the odds before proving ourselves. Let Mbenge produce the goods and then they can decide.”

Of course, this is all contingent on Mbenge taking care of business on September 9 when he fights tough Mzwixolo Ndwayana in his first title defence.

Berman also had good news for Team Lerena with confirmation that international television will take his IBO fight against Youri Kalenga in a number of markets, including Scandinavia and the Baltic region, Panama, Turkey, France, Andorra and Monaco. Other deals are likely to be confirmed in coming days.
