A pair of little men are expected to light up the Eastern Cape and beyond this weekend when they do battle for the IBO’s minimumweight championship.

SA’s Simpiwe “Chain Reaction” Konkco puts his title on the line for the fourth time against crafty Joey Canoy of the Philippines in a fight being broadcast live on SuperSport 10 from 2.30pm on Sunday.

In what is expected to be a high-calibre fight, the Golden Gloves fighter will match his ringcraft and work rate against a tough southpaw looking to make amends for his last visit to South Africa. Last year, Hekkie Budler had the beating of him, although at a higher weight.

Konkco will surely benefit from top-class sparring, chiefly against WBA champion Budler and IBF title-holder Moruti Mthalane, but he’s also had expert leftie Sabelo Ngebinyana giving him top work.

As the WBC’s number one-ranked contender, Konkco has much riding on this encounter. Defeat could be catastrophic.

The Filipino will bring it hard, as he most recently did against Melvin Jerusalem, but he will need something special to up-end Konkco, who will draw energy from his home support.

“We’re expecting a big crowd,” said promoter Mlandeli Tengimfene, who has also put together a terrific undercard.
