SA’s boxing barber makes the cut

Joburg’s fighting barber has signed for Golden Gloves.

Exciting junior-middleweight Roarke Knapp (6-0-1) will have his first fight under his new promotional arm in the new year.

“He’s someone I’ve had my eye on for a while,” said Rodney Berman. “He’s a guy who keeps on winning, and in style.”

Knapp was supposed to fight on Friday, but the event was cancelled. Golden Gloves will now feature him on its “Battle Stations” card on February 24.

The hot prospect works for a barber in Edenvale by day and has a reputation for being a hard worker in the gym. In May, he had his most impressive outing, drawing with 20-2-1 Eric Mukadi in a fight that demonstrated his potential.

Knapp boxed sporadically from the age of nine but began seriously aged 16 before turning pro in 2016, earning rave reviews along the way.

He’s now under the watchful eye of Vusi Mtolo, who has high hopes for the 20-year-old.
