Latest news

Welcome to the new Golden Gloves website. I hope you like it – please feel free to email us your thoughts, both positive and negative.
I will be penning a monthly column for the site, simply putting my thoughts out there. Boxing is such a vibrant sport it’s only natural to debate topics and thrash ideas about. I look forward to doing so in the months to come.
An obvious subject first up concerns the South African fights I would like to see (naturally, as promoter I wouldn’t mind making them too).
There are many top fights, but the three that most appeal to me are the following:
Johnny Muller vs Thabiso Mchunu
Hold onto your hats! Johnny is light-heavyweight champ, Thabiso, a southpaw, is cruiserweight champion, so this could be made at catchweight. Both are unbeaten and both can punch. I think this would be a throwback to fights of the past. Whatever else happens, it won’t lack for excitement.
Gideon Buthelezi vs Nkosinathi Joyi
Don’t get your hopes up. This won’t happen because each is aligned to a different promoter and TV network.
But we can dream. Buthelezi showed great skill and poise in dismantling Hekkie Budler recently and although Joyi would probably start as betting favourite, I wouldn’t discount Buthelezi. Joyi has immense talent, but Buthelezi is rugged and relentless. This would be a fight for the ages.
Tommy Oosthuizen vs William Gare
Happily, I’ve just made this one. This is the young gun against the old ‘un. Tommy is going one way, and that’s up, while Gare is an old dog who knows every trick there is. I wanted to tag the fight as “Put up or Shut Up”, with the onus on Gare to prove that he can cope with a supreme talent like “Tommy Gun”, who simply gets better and better.
I’m in the business of making good fights, so I’m delighted to have delivered on this one.
Until next month.

Isaac is no longer in the Golden Gloves stable.
Don’t see the need for Isaac to fight Johnny anyways. Unless Golden Gloves are looking for a reason to off load Johnny as well.

Thabiso Mchunu could make his weight the last time he fought so I doubt he will se the 90kgs again let alone 86kg. I think I better match up will be Thabiso vs Flo! Both can punch and both are undefeated!!

Apologies, this column was penned before Isaac was released from the Golden Gloves stable. I have since asked for it to be removed. — Rodney Berman
