Tshifhiwa “The Atomic Spider” Munyai (19-1-1) is firmly on course for a crack at the WBA world bantamweight title on June 18, at Emperors Palace in South Africa. This was confirmed by internationally respected boxing official Stan Christodoulou this morning, following Munyai’s impressive 12-round points victory over Daniel Ferraras of the Philippines at Emperors Palace on Saturday night. “Munyai is a breathtaking talent” said Christodoulou, who was the very first South African ever inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. “As such I have strongly recommended that the 24-year-old Munyai be approved to challenge the winner of the March 27 WBA bantamweight championship shootout in Venezuela between the current world titleholder Anselmo Moreno of Panama and Nehomar Cermeno”.
As one of the world’s greatest referees of all time, Christodoulou’s opinion is highly valued by the WBA (World Boxing association), a sanctioning organization he’s had a splendid working relationship with over a long period of time, and given the magnitude of the Golden Gloves Promotions/Emperors Palace fistic “showpiece” on June 18, which will coincide with the FIFA World Cup, it figures that a WBA world title event would register bingo at South Africa’s ‘Mecca of Boxing’.
“Make no mistake, as the current WBA Intercontinental champion, Munyai is highly thought of abroad and I feel supremely confident that he poses an undeniable threat to Moreno (28-1-1) or Cermeno (19-0), both of whom are outstanding talents” concluded Christodoulou.
Golden Gloves Promoter Rodney Berman agrees. “Stan would never recommend a fighter if he thinks that athlete would be out of his depth and I’m delighted that Munyai performed so brilliantly on the night”said Berman.
Clearly the Moreno/Cermeno championship contest looks like being a ding-dong affair and no doubt both Berman and Christodoulou will be keenly monitoring the strengths of both warriors in the build-up to the fight.
“Fighters like Munyai come along once in a decade, what with his sublime skills, razor-sharp jab and incisive counter punching” added Berman, who even now is busy compiling the likely product mix for the June 18 extravaganza.
That the CEO of GGP has a tantalizing resume of boxers from which to choose, is an ascertained fact and the likes of WBA Pan African super middleweight champion Tommy “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen; whom Christodoulou rates as one of this country’s most exciting young talents, IBO world junior flyweight champion Hekkie “The Hex-ecutioner” Budler, WBA Pan African lightweight boss Jason “Badman” Bedeman, WBC Intercontinental light heavyweight monarch Isaac “The Golden Boy” Chilembe and IBO world welterweight ruler Lovemore Ndou will all be in the running for a place on the bill.
For now, however, the “Atomic Spider” can be reasonably assured that he has a date with destiny on June 18 at the ‘Palace of Dreams’.

GGP needs to stress that this website is open to all genuine fight fans and while their views may differ, that’s part of the game. We do, however, object to rude and defamatory comments that have no place on this site and while both Rodney Berman and I support “freedom of speech”, please gentlemen behave in a manner in keeping with the great and sportsmanlike image of boxing. Sleazy remarks do not belong on the GGP website…not now and not ever!
“Cheer class” the words by Mr. Terry said Saturday night, when this young man fought.
Mr. Terry you as right as could be, every movement of the spider was pristine, he jab was rapid, combinations was indeed effective. The way this guy fights it’s has the excitement of a world cup and the amount of talent he has e he turns the fight into he’s chess game, but no matter what move the other guy makes he has him check mated all the time. The bottom line is this guy will become a world champion.
And amen to that Mr. Terry
Thanx Britt and it was very nice to meet you personally on Saturday night. Glad you enjoyed the tournament!
Im sorry, but I cant agree. Munyai is a classy looking fighter but lacks the firepower for the division. Sure his opponent was tough as nails but I can help but think that the measure in the division being Darchinyan, Donaire, Agbeko, Montiel or Perez would have destroyed Ferraras. Munyai is no world beater!
Just to add to my opinion above, his cheeks can be cut and there is a questionmark over his chin. It was a great punch but dont forget the guy who threw it has fought almost all his fights between 110 and 114lbs – a flyweight. If a powerpuncher like Donaire hit Munyai with that punch, I think we would still be counting!
I’ve noted your comments “Classy” and others that you have made and like everyone else you have an opinion and are entitled to it. Good luck.
Its not as though Im saying he cant beat Moreno or Cermeno. Its the easier belt for him to attempt to take, but thats where it ends. Montiel, Perez, Hasagawa – I think not…
Good things come to though who wait, and of course have a good promoter behind them.
**reading between the lines**
Classy what are you talking about?
Dont know what he was talking about Britt, but I was referring to the judicious honing of a fighter’s skills and of course the correct matchmaking and guidance necessary to succeed in the toughest sport known to man.
Ow sorry my bad we should go for a Coffey Mr. Terry
Coffee is good Britt, but a “cold” ale suits me even better.
I sometimes feel that the World is not going to be here very much longer.
