“Grooming Is All Important In The Development Of Simba” – Mitchell

Former two-time world champion Brian Mitchell says he won’t be hurried in the development of heavyweight prospect Flo “The Demolition Man” Simba (5-0, with 4 knockouts). The two-time Hall of Famer, who manages the career of the undefeated Simba, added that his 20-year-old charge is at a very important point in his career and notwithstanding the Demolition Man’s electrifying success since turning professional in 2009, the most important formula in Simba’s burgeoning career slow grooming.

“Everybody knows what a riveting talent Flo is but make no mistake he still has plenty to learn and I’m grateful that he has Harold ‘The Hammer’ Volbrecht as his trainer”. Mitchell and Volbrecht, who were once a formidable trainer/fighter team when the “Road Warrior” was riding the crest as an undefeated WBA and IBF world junior lightweight champion, were both reasonably impressed after Simba posted a lop-sided six-round points victory over the gutsy Elvis Moyo on the undercard of the recent BLOCKBUSTER bill at Emperors Palace. “Flo had him (Moyo) down three times in the fight and though he (Simba) absorbed some big shots in return, I was pleased with the way my guy shook off the effects of those punches and dominated the contest virtually from start to finish” said Mitchell.

Volbrecht was also suitably happy with his young starlet’s showing and remarked, “One must remember that Flo only had half-a-dozen bouts as an amateur and his professional career has thus far encompassed some impressive stoppage victories, most notably over the game and experienced Stephen Castle. Yes, I thought it important that Simba paced himself and went the full six rounds for the first time as pro”. That the “Hammer” shares Mitchell’s view on Simba’s ongoing development is important and like his former boxer, the phlegmatic Volbrecht won’t be coaxed into pushing his heavyweight ‘find’ too quickly.

“In fight parlance Simba is a baby and yet his rate of improvement has been astounding, to say the least. There’s a helluva lot of work to be done, but I figure that he should be ready for some serious opposition by this time next year” concluded Volbrecht.

In the meantime Flo is scheduled to appear on the Golden Gloves Promotions Box-and-Dine bill at Emperors Palace on July 28 against an opponent yet to be announced.

Mitchell had the final word. “GGP Promoter Rodney Berman has assured us that Flo will have another four fights before the end of the year and if things pan out the way we want them to it will mean that he (Simba) will enter the festive break with a record of 10-0”.

The way Brian and Harold are handling Flo could only be for the best. They were a great team before and I think they are proving it again. There are two questions I like everyone to answer.Remember this is your opinion . No 1:Who were S.A best boxer and reason.(Take it from the “80″).No 2:who do you vote currently The best boxer in S.A and reason.

I am not sure if he was in the 80′s but i watched a few of his fights and i think the best boxer in the past is definitley Charlie Weir, and the best boxer at present with no doubt in my mind is by far Tommy Oosthuizen.

I beleive that since Flo is so limited in experience it would be best for him to be fighting once a month until he gets to the 15 fight regeon. He would learn more in the ring then he would from the self same sparring partners that Harold is packing at the gym.

My best south Africa boxers must be, Corrie Sanders, very humbled man I’m still very young so I’m not familiar with the Coetzees, and the Du Plooy’s but I familiar with the Sanders who was a world heavy weight champion and stopped Wladimir Klitschko.
My current South African best must be Thomas “Tommy-Gun” Oosthuizen

Classy Mr. Harold really has a variety of sparring partners for Flo, he has Thomas, David, Johnny, Jared Lovett helps out now and then and he’ll be back by May next year last time I could recall Joseph Chingangu was there he beat Osborne Mr. Andre was there now and then as well, but in a way your right.

All Im saying in that variety is the spice of life…I have been watching the “Tyson Raw and Uncut” series currently on ESPN and he had his first 24 fights in 16 months! His development meant that by the time he had his world title shot he had seen em all in terms of style. I think that there perhaps are not quite as many Heavyweights in SA like the States back in the 80′s

Reality is Harold has the best selection of Heavyweights (and other heavier weight) sparring partners in the country. If more S.A heaveyweights starting training with Harold then Flo and Johnny would have to start fighting stable mates. In a 12- 18 months from now a showdown between the two might be inevitable anyway, unless Johhny drops a weight and fights their comfortably. Interesting times.

I agree, Harold and Mr Mitchell knows what they have planned for Flo’s future and they know how to get Flo on that road to success. Flo does have good sparring partners and his last fight was a good learning experience for him.

Yes of course Flo is lacking experience at the moment but we have to give the guy a chance, he’s only had a few fights amateur and pro, he is going to leave his mark in the boxing world, just watch. Uppercut, to answer your question, best current boxers (I have 2) would be Tommy, best established champ by far, and Johnny, I believe he wants it the most. Best 80′s boxer, absolutely, Gerrie Coetzee.
