Let’s firstly admit that the threatened “Armageddon” at Emperors Palace last night, between reigning IBO world super middleweight champion Isaac “The Golden Boy” Chilemba and his challenger Tommy “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen was hardly that, but a hard-fought, punishing battle for 12-rounds and if certain observers felt the lack of knockdowns detracted from the fiery action, let them think again! True, though acolytes missed the sight of witnessing either fighter celebrate a victory, which was the pivotal goal of Saturday night’s bill, named “DECLARATION OF WAR”, both warriors left the arena bloodied but unbowed.
I suppose one could call it an alluring fight, certainly on paper, but for reasons of style, neither boxer’s deployment of skills calls for a return match, which could very well end much like the first. “Oh, we’ve already had more than one pundit call for a rematch” said Golden Gloves Promoter Rodney Berman, “but given their level of talent, it won’t happen. Instead they’ll both be taken along slowly and while it’s certain that Tommy will remain at super middleweight, Chilemba actually belongs at the light heavyweight limit and that will be his next international goal.” said Berman.
A pre-fight betting favourite, Oosthuizen at 21 was looking for his first senior world title to accompany his two IBO Youth world titles but to the majority of ringsiders few seemed convinced that he earned it after a 12-rounds of a fight that was more gruelling than it looked with both fighters showing signs of physical wear and tear. Claret showed on the face of Chilemba first and Oosthuizen’s lacerated eye, that he’d injured months earlier bled freely over the last few rounds.
In a nutshell, the fighters respective styles; Oosthuizen a counter-punching southpaw and Chilemba an astute retaliatory banger himself, never figured to make this a contest where they’d look to scrape one opponent off the mat, but take nothing away from either fighter they bravely sought triumph, especially after Tommy had won the first round with a pin-point jab and Isaac, in championship fashion, roared out to win the second. After that the rounds were exceptionally close, as indicated by the final assessment of points, which saw judge Ace Makaluza (SA) score Chilemba a winner 115-113, Judge Deon Duarte (SA), who had the bout even at 114-114 and the UK’s John Coyle, who reckoned the Tommy Gun had got there by 115-113.
Chilemba’s record is now 15-1-1, with 8 knockouts and Oosthuizen 11-1-0, with 8 knockouts.
In the main-undercard bout, Sipho Taliwe and the Philippines Vinvin Rufino put up a lively fight for the vacant WBC International junior lightweight title, which was ultimately won by Taliwe on a split decision, however, it has to be said that the decision, that was initially announced as a draw before being altered when it was became clear there was a mistake with one of the official’s arithmetic. That type of incident, however, always has a lot of muck-spreaders muttering scenes of fiddle-and-fix, though in this case the error was proved to be a bona fide mistake.
If GGP Promoter Rodney Berman’s dream of finding a future African heavyweight champion of the world is ever to be realized, the man who could attain that feat may well be Flo “The Demolition Man” Simba who’s lethal right hand struck the valiant Argentine Mauro Adrian Ordiales like a ‘bolt-from-the-blue’ in the 5th round of their heavyweight fight to knock the rugged 35-year-old veteran completely out at 55 seconds of the round.
Mind you, Ordiales, whose punching ability had previously accounted for 21 of his 22 victims in a record that read 22-7, had every right to be feared and after sustaining two knockdowns in the first round, he fired back a wicked salvo of hooks that proved once and for all that Simba had a ‘chin’ to go with that murderous battery of punches. For a split second it seemed that Simba would go down, but the 22-year-old University student is made of far sturdier stuff and after weathering the storm he scored another two knockdowns in the third and fourth round, before landing that splintering right that looked like it would tear off the good-looking Argentine’s head.
“Sabre’s rapidly becoming this country’s biggest drawcard” said trainer Harold Volbrecht, while the fighter’s manager Brian Mitchell is obviously delighted with his progress and who wouldn’t be after 8 consecutive victories, 7 by knockouts.
In a major surprise, Jason “Badman” Bedeman lost his first fight as a professional when he was halted in the 5th round of a turbulent fight. Faced with a dangerous-hitting Argentine, Daniel Dorrego, the Rosettenville boxer was dropped for an eight count in the opening round but then staged another of his amazing comebacks, winning the second and third rounds and hurting his chunkier-built rival with terrific body shots. Yet just when it seemed that the South African would post the winning punches in the fourth frame, he’s porous defence caused him to suffer two knockdowns, and despite being known for his incredible courage, Bedeman sat out the final tally, causing a look of total bemusement on trainer Manny Fernandes’s face!
To make things worse, the two-time All-African lightweight king then vanished, leaving his trainer searching for hours to locate him. Bedeman now drops to 13-1-2, with 10 knockouts and Dorrega; 30-2-1, with 22 knockdowns.
In the curtain raiser, Bongani Dlamini proved what a great left hooker he is when he halted Joseph Modise in the opening round of their lightweight bout.

A draw is a fair assesment of Chilemba vs Oosthuizen fight. Oosthuizen didnt do enough to win the title and Chilemba didnt deserve to loose the title.

Ringside at the palace of dreams was amazing as always, dissapointing though in the fact that Jason lost his first fight and that there was no winner in the Chilemba Oosthuizen fight. I think however tht both men would want, and deserve, another go at each other to once and for all make it clear who the better pugilist is as in old bitter rivalry tradition. GGP would have to reconsider the posibility of a rematch.

I’ve just read an article which I think is of great interest to the fans on this web page, seems there will be a panel of judges reviewing the Chilemba vs Oosthuizen fight and deciding on a winner, follow this link to see for yourselves http://www.sowetanlive.co.za/sport/2010/11/08/panel-reviews-drawn-fight-as-both-claim-win. Mr. Terry, is there any truth in this?

I said it. Tommy could not beat Isaac. It was a disappointing performance from both but mostly Tommy. Every time Isaac came forward. Tommy duked low or held. Isaac was far too wild. Jumping in with his hands low,if he missed he was wide open. Harold was telling tommy to keep his hands up with he should have told him that during training. What you do in training, you’ll do in a fight. Chelembe should relax, not be so wild, pick his punches more. And he’ll go far. No doubt both have talent but I doubt they’re training correctly. Tommy didn’t keep it long. Everything after the jab. Box and move. 3. 4, 5 punches?

And to Jason Bedeman, you’ve done well in south africa. Cuttiere’s no way you should’ve been in that fight. Your opponent was simply on another level. Shame on your managers and match makers

I thought Chilembe did enough to edge the fight. As for Jason, people on this site often complain about GGP putting their fighters up against bums. Now Jason fights strong opposition and gets beaten now they all crying. Nobody wants to lose but the fact that Jason stayed down, then left the ring leaving Manny to try and find him for hours afterwards tells me the guy isn’t mature enough for boxing success or defeat. Flo did impress.
November 08, 2010 at 1:28 pm, Classy said:
Jason could have beaten Dorrego! The problem lies with the fact that Manny doesn’t teach a defensive strategy. He was telling Jason to stand in the pocket and trade…WTF? Jason should have run and given away a few rounds and taken Dorrego to the deeper end of the fight. He got sucked into a brawl and his jaw was exposed – again. Jason will not cut it at an international level. His face said it all. When he got knocked down – he didn’t want it! You cannot call him “Heart of a lion” when he clearly didn’t have it!

Shew, where do we begin? First of all – i have to say that besides predicting all the fight-outcomes with a win or lose, WHAT should NEVER have been allowed is to re-appoint a DRAW as a WIN, that for me was very unprofessional – and in my opinion I think the Philippine-fighter should have won on points – however, that is probably why i am not a ref or judge
Nevertheless, there was a ‘boxer’ sitting behind me who was cheering on Chilemba – but when he saw that Isaac was not doing as well as he’d hoped, he commented that he would then focus on Oosthuizen to win. If he is reading this – i would like to tell to him the following: Stick with your fighter through thick or thin! when he is down – encourage and stand by him and when he is winning – be grateful that you stood your ground when even the fighter was proving otherwise. But best of all – he should not have been scared of the big guy sitting next to him who clearly had his bet on Oosthuizen, who gave me LIP when I commented towards him not to just change his mind because his boxer was not winning on points. If he had stuck his ground – he wouldn’t of been disappointed as Isaac managed to defend his title!! I USED to support Tommy, but i think all the fame and fortune (as the saying goes) had gone to his head a little – becoming over-confident and perhaps even a little arrogant in the ring. What a pity! He is still however a brilliant fighter and packs punches like no other. He is strong like a bull but i think he needed this draw to bring him down-to-size. WHERE DID ALL THE PEOPLE GO WHEN THE POINTS WERE ANNOUNCED… all the people that were making a noise saying that Tommy was going to put Isaac ‘to sleep’? They were nowhere to be seen. The ones who laugh last – laugh last… laugh the loudest and longest! WELL DONE Isaac!

Dink if you think Chilemba won every round then boxing is certainly not for you. Do you even know what criteria judges use to score a round? Their were 3 international judges sitting at 3 different sides of the ring and they all scored the fight within 1 round of each other. One had it 7-5 rnds for Tommy, the other 7-5 rnds for Isaac and the other 6 rnds each.

I look at the game from a fan and critic’s point of view. You obviously share a close friendship or bond with Jason.
That doesn’t change the fact that he got the snot beat out of him on Saturday. That doesn’t change the fact that he took the easy way out of the fight – a knee and not answering the count, and it doesn’t change the fact that Jason may never fulfill his potential! He will be great domestically but his frailties which should have been sorted out in his amateur days are very much there. He has a weak chin and the bad defense and lack of strategy can be blamed on Manny Fernandez! The chin will always be his main weakness but if he went to a smarter trainer he could learn more effective strategy and defense. There are things that he can change within his control – he just needs to be man enough to admit it and make those changes instead of blaming lack of quality sparring partners and other factors!
I like Jason and I think he is a great kid – but his problems will become terminal unless he is willing to sort them out.
This beating was a long time coming!

Flo this was the best I seen him box.Power was great and the determination in his face were great. There are some big things ahead for this MAN.GGP look after Flo the way you guys do and he will one day become champ.

My goodness what Sh#t is that not having a good “CHIN” if 99% of people get hit on the chin they will go down.
Jason went down 4 times that is enough for him to decide to call it.
That is what you call a mature decision and not take more damage.
I guarantee you,Jason will be back stronger and hungry to get back where he belongs.

Because grant never gave up he kept going to me that is a heart of a lion! But Jason learn from this and move forward you are a very good boxer a very talented one in fact so just keep that head up high

Tell Michael Katsidis that a chin isn’t important! He is rather limited as a fighter but his chin and heart when under fire bails him out of tough situations and makes him a world class fighter.
If you don’t have a chin you need a good defensive strategy to hide that chin – Amir Khan for example. He hasn’t got a chin but Freddie Roach has instilled a strategy to keep his chin out of harms way and it will get its first test against Marcos Maidana later this month.
