Budler beaten and Sting stung
Baby Jake Matlala poses with Hekkie Budler and Gideon Buthelezi

Baby Jake Matlala poses with Hekkie Budler and Gideon Buthelezi

Despite being weight-drained, challenged Gideon Buthelezi produced the performance of his life to lift the IBO junior-flyweight title against defending champion Hekkie Budler at Emperors Palace last night.

Fighting before an appreciative capacity crowd, many of whom were in attendance to support Baby Jake Matlala, the pair waged an all-out battle of attrition throughout 12 rounds.

Buthelezi won by split decision, the judges returning scorecards that read as follows: 114-118 (Buthelezi), 117-113 (Budler) and 113-115 (Buthelezi). The new champion was later awarded his title belt by Matlala.

Although the contest was tight from beginning to end, Buthelezi benefited from his crisper punching and he was often able to pierce his way through Budler’s defence, knocking the champion’s head back almost at will.

Earlier, heavyweight sensation Flo Simba maintained his high KO ratio by stopping rugged Zimbabwean Sting Gonorenda in the fifth round. Gonorenda put up a tremendous challenge, but Simba’s hard punches worked a treat and finally wore him down.

After taking a count early in the fifth round, a tiring Gonorenda was saved from more punishment when the action was waved off at 2:10 of the round.
There was an upset in another heavyweight bout when Stephen Castle, the “People’s Champion”, was stopped in the third by Elvis Moyo. The killer punch was a shot to the liver which clearly muted Castle’s gameplan. Hurt, he battled on, but a frenzied Moyo attacked the body, putting him down twice in the third, after which Castle’s corner pulled him out between rounds.

At lightweight, Takalani Dangala and Warren Joubert went at it hammer and tongs for six rounds before a draw was announced.

In another lightweight bout, hot prospect Alex Jonker scored a third round TKO over game but limited Charles Sekhwibidu.

Despite the great fight action, the most uplifting moment of the night was when Matlala entered the arena, hoisted aloft on a throne.
Looking slightly frail and emotional, he acknowledged the great crowd before settling in to watch the action.

What is happening to all the golden gloves GOLDEN boys???
As soon as all of them have good opponents the seem to lose, first was jason, then tommy drew with chilemba and visa versa and now hekkie, as soon as flow gets someone like mchunu its over… I hope this is not a trend as golden gloves likes matching their “prospects” against have dead opponents, just my 2cents!

Jason had an off night with the now 28th ranked boxere in the lightweigh division in the world.
    That is my 2 cents.
One more thing Jason is still the best lightweight fighter in South Africa,no one in South Africa has even come close to do any thing to him.
What I saw with Alex Jonker last night was that a fighter that weighed in at 58kg,s rocked him a few time, lucky the ref stop the fight nice and as soon as he did, in Jonkers faver.
So let us not get to fare a head of our selfs when saying Alex is the next big thing!!
    Full Stop.

    Hi Guys
I think Golden Gloves has some of the best young up and comeing boxers in the country.
Saying that they are doing so well for there age, they are not even 23 years old yet.
For people to expect more than what we are getting from them right now is unfair.

@ Nomercy, how can you pull punches at these hard working young boxers that go all out and give there best each and every time when they are in the ring.
I am as well a big fan of alot of boxer in Golden gloves and one Jason the Badman Bedeman is still the most exciting fighter in South Africa.

I am astonished at the incompetence of Lulama Mtya, who scored the fight for Budler. I mean, seriously. Hekkie has loads of heart and he can certainly take a punch, but the fight was not particularly close. Gideon won comfortably, as correctly reflected on the other two judges’ cards.

Please remember that Mtya also judged Budler the winner in the first Rubillar fight, after Hekkie took a similarly one-sided beating. (The other culprit on that occasion was Deon Dwarte).

Lulama Mtya should be immediately suspended from any further officiating duties. His ridiculous scoring is bringing SA boxing into disrepute.

Another entrant to the Hall of Shame is Colin Nathan. Come on, Mr Nathan! Surely you can teach your fighter to MOVE HIS HEAD? If he keeps taking head shots like he does now, I shudder to think about the long-term effects. Hekkie has a good body attack and a good chin. He could be a very good fighter of he could bob, weave and duck as well. But he can’t, because no-one ever taught him to.

And lastly – to all the Hekkie groupies who have been saying insulting things about Buthelezi and about Elias Tshabalala over the last few weeks – IN YOUR FACE. That sort of nonsense has no place in boxing. Hekkie, who is a decent young man, showed RESPECT for his opponent and his opponent’s trainer. Why could you not do likewise?

    Shame on you.

Firstly – That was a fantastic fight between Hex and Gideon. A fitting tribute to the legend Baby Jake and I am glad to have seen the generosity shown by all at the dinner to have helped out one of the biggest legends in this country.

    The fight itself –
I said Hex would win. I was wrong. I feel that the fight was in the eye of the beholder and that in absolutely no way was one fighter better than the other by a margin of 4 points. Sure hex took alot of shots cleanly but he far outworked Gideon and commanded the ring.

Gideon showed me that he has fast and heavy hands. I am surprised he has not knocked out more guys in his division.

I still don’t think he did enough to take the title away.

Jason is the best Lightweight in SA, now that is a joke, dont get me wrong, i like Jason, he is a great guy and has loads of heart but you cant use your head as your first line of defence, he will be lucky to still be boxing at the age of 25 and if he is still boxing than he will be Punchie, i mean Sipho Taliwe a JUNIOR-LIGHTWEIGHT would easily KO Jason inside 1 round, EASILY….

GG regards Tommy, Flo, Hekkie as World beaters when they wouldnt even win commonwealth titles…. Also why should NoMercy pull his punches, everyone is entitled to their opinion and if the fighters dont like what is being written about them than they mustn’t read it.

I am disappointed with the result as a fan but I believe Gideon won the fight 115-113 nevertheless. I have seen what Hekkie can do in the ring sparring, he can bob and weave and he has been given the right tools. But those of you who have stepped into that squared circle as a fighter know how easy it is to lose your way.

“Everybody got plans…til they get hit”
    Mike Tyson

Freddie Roach said something when Manny Pacquiao lost to Eric Morales, that it was as much his fault as it was Manny’s. Manny lost the game plan and Freddie said it was his fault he couldn’t get him back on track and he took responsibility for the loss.

I believe the same applies to Hekkie and Colin and I believe they would agree. Hekkie lost his way and Colin couldn’t get him back on track that day. Mistakes don’t change ability.

It happened to the greatest fighter and trainer of our generation, being Pacquiao and Roach, and so a loss speaks nothing of the man in the ring or the man in his corner it merely adds to their experiential wealth.

“I never thought of losing, but now that it’s happened, the only thing is to do it right. That’s my obligation to all the people who believe in me. We all have to take defeats in life.” Ali

And so I believe Hekkie and Colin will come back stronger and better. Congratulations to Elias and Gideon, enjoy the spoils of war!

I think it’s our job’s here at GGP to start telling our promoters what we want, we not going to tell them how to do their jobs but let’s make suggestions, on fights we would love to see. I mean for what it’s worth this weekend show I attended was brilliant, and I think GGP has the potential to show cast shows much-much better than that.
But it’s up to us let’s start making suggestion people, Cause we will never let our Fighters walk this journey alone we backing our champions.
And people let’s try not to criticise our fighters, lets advise them.

    Guys

I am curious as to which path Flo Simba is going to take.

Is he going to fill out physically (remember he’s only 21), and add another 10kg or so? If so, what style is he going to employ to enable him to compete at the elite level? Is he going to be a swarming, bobbing, weaving powerpuncher like Joe Frazier or Mike Tyson? His compact physique would seem to indicate that that’s the way for him to go. At the moment, he’s more of a stand-up boxer, but that style isn’t going to serve him well against the Eastern European giants with their massive reach advantages. He would do better to fight out of a crouch.

Or, is he going to stay at his current weight… in which case, would he be better off to drop 2kg and fight at cruiserweight instead? At least then he won’t be at height and reach disadvantages against the elite level fighters.

    Thoughts?

Just look at the website they are still busy with Budler’s fight.

Bernard – that’s a pretty facile comment, buddy. You have no idea about my lawyering abilities, and that has no relevance to the issue, anyway. Stop with the personal insults and stick to the topic.

Sure, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. But bear in mind that opinions can still be right or wrong.

    Examples:

Shakespeare was a useless poet who had a very poor grasp of the English language. WRONG.

The All Blacks are a mediocre rugby team. WRONG.

Hekkie Budler beat Gideon Buthelezi. WRONG.

See what I mean? Just because it’s your “opinion”, doesn’t mean it carries the same weight as other opinions. It can still be wrong.

I think you are misleading us about lawyering (or is that “legal”) abilities, please bear (or is that “bare”) in mind that lawyers need to score at least above 70% for high school English!

Classy, how much would you like to bet? :-)

You are wrong on the “bare/bear” distinction, by the way. “Bear in mind” is the correct usage. Again, how much would you like to bet?

Congratulations Classy, that’s a huge achievement.

If there anyone on this site who is capable of conducting a debate without trying to threaten and intimidate? Hell even the girls do it (Boxing supporter, this means you).

Agree 100%, I am tired of being threatened or insulted every time I say something critical about a fighter.

I know this is an old article but i just want to ask a question… What fight were those 3 judges watching? The point differences were so large i was shocked.

My view on the fight, Buthelezi land harder cleaner punches, Budler worked harder. Budler needs a stronger coach, although Colin has done a fantastic job I think he has taken Budler as far as he can, it’s now time to move on.
