TOMMY “TOMMY GUN” OOSTHUIZEN:
Record and rating:
Has an unblemished resume of 11-0, with 8 stoppages in a career that begun in July 2008 and is one of South Africa’s most popular fighters. Has already won three international titles; the vacant IBO Youth light heavyweight (11-7-2009), vacant IBO Youth super middleweight title (12-9-2009) and vacant WBA Pan African super middleweight title, against Jared Lovett (W 12), Cleber Alves (W 12) and Tshepang Mohale (W KO 4) respectively. .
Previous Fight:
Had a fine scrap with Saul Roman (32-6), before stopping the shorter man in the eighth round on Aril 27, 2010.
Moreover, took some vigorous shots to the chin en route to that win and seemed to prove that he has the taking power to go with his boxing talents and punching prowess.
Age & Physical Equipment:
At 21-years-of-age, the 6’4” Tommy Gun has, according to his trainer Harold Volbrecht, everything on his side. A southpaw, Oosthuizen owns a ramrod right jab, but despite his instinctive aggression, like most ‘lefties’, a great number of whom are counter-punchers, he can be content to win his bouts from the outside like he did when outboxing Jared “The Storm” Lovett in 2009.
Quality of Opposition:
Be honest, no world class performers can be found in the Boksburg performers record, not yet anyway and Roman was by far the most competent of his opponents.
Best Weapons and Style:
A laid-back counter-puncher with undeniable predatory skill, Oosthuizen could be far more dangerous if he decided to exhibits some of that outrageous accuracy more belligerently coming forward. And to think that he even achieves results with his hands dangling below his waist. Apart from that pestering jab, thrown from a albatross-wingspan, the Oosthuizen weaponry features a numbing right-uppercut and brutal right and left hooks. Defence, however, is a problem and despite his height can be nailed with left hooks and right hands!
Intangibles:
Will the 6 months layoff adversely affect the Gun, especially since he’s trainer has been so carefully nurturing his fighter’s seriously damaged eye, purportedly sustained in a car accident? Will the champion’s advantage in terms of the quality of opposition they’ve both faced play a pivotal role in the outcome of the fight? If Chilemba manages to reopen Oosthuizen’s eye cuts and then elects to ‘box’ rather than ‘mix’ with his slightly younger rival, debilitate the challenger’s efforts?
Will the weight of being an overwhelming favourite, in fact count against Oosthuizen, who we’re forced to admit has never fought anyone quite as good as the Malawi-Born Chilemba?
ISAAC “THE GOLDEN BOY” CHILEMBA;
Record and Rating:
Born in Malawi, the 24-year-old Chilemba turned professional in October 2005 and went undefeated in eight bouts before being outpointed over 6-rounds by Wilberforce Shiphepo, a loss he suitably avenged four months later. A highly astute boxer with a respectable if not devastating punch, Chilemba then went on to win four international titles in only nine months; namely the vacant ABU (African Boxing Union, Super middleweight throne (13-9-2008), the vacant WBO Africa light heavyweight title (13-6-2009), the WBC International light heavyweight crown (31-10-2009) and lastly the vacant IBO super middleweight title (19-6-2010).
The Golden Boy’s opponents in respective order –from first title to last – were Charles Adamu, David Kitooke, Doudou Ngumbu and Australia’s Michael Bolling, all of whom he beat on points.
Previous Fight:
Chilemba lost the necessary weight within less than a week after hearing Oosthuizen had been withdrawn from the bout because of a motor-vehicle accident and then proceeded to give dangerous hitting Australian southpaw Michael Bolling a boxing lesson on his way to lifting the IBO world super middleweight title!
Age & Physical Equipment:
The 24-year-old Chilemba is three inches shorter than his challenger, but sports a good chin and powerful upper-torso. For a fairly tall-man, he often makes himself seem shorter because of his style, but jabs well and confidently and besides a marked tendency to ‘slap’ is a very good counter puncher.
Quality of Opposition:
The champion has fought a variety of good fighters and lets not forget that his title-wins came against a hardy crop of boxers with impressive pedigrees: For example, Adamu had a record of 16-3, Kitooke entered the ring with 10 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw, undefeated Ngumbu lost his WBC International title as a betting favourite, having won 20 bouts on the trot. Finally, Bolling came to South Africa with a clean-sheet of 12-0 before Chilemba inflicted his initial loss as a professional.
Best weapons and Style:
Slapping is a problem with Isaac, but he does have a points-scoring jab and potent left hook. The Malawian fights well on the outside but is normally strong enough to neutralise an opponent figuring to rough-him-up on the ropes.
Intangibles:
Can he go 12-rounds without being nailed by one of Oosthuizen’s home-run punches and if so how will he react if he goes down? If the challenger matches him with the jab, does Chilemba have the ability to switch game plans? Can the IBO world champion hurt Oosthuizen? Remembering that Chilembe’s last knockout win came in 2008, has he become a reluctant warrior content to win contests on points?

We spoke about Marketing and Advertising of our Boxing heroes in another topic.
Was really surprised to see that nothing much was mentioned this week in either the Germiston City News, or Boksburg Advertiser regarding this tournament. Especially in the final week before the fight……
Ok, I’m lying …… Germiston City News did feature an article regarding Grant Fourie’s Fight on Saturday night …… duh…..

Why limit it to a Golden Gloves facebook page…how about a general South African boxing page that can encompass all promotions and fights around the country. It would appeal to more fightfans and improve the quality of debate.

Well mr Terry. You have just said it. ‘You’re quite happy with your website as it receives posts from notable boxing fans’. I think thats one of the reasons why cage fighting attracts more people than boxing here in south africa. A lot of boxing promoters can learn a lot from younger mma promoters. No wonder their shows are a sell out within the first week. In all my life I have never seen 1 huge bill board or massive boxing poster promoting a fight. Another thing. Is the money issue. Do you know how much a boxer could get for his first pro fight and do you know how much a cage fighter gets for his first fight? Steven Castle, i’m sure you also know what cage fighters get paid. Whats your opinion?
November 05, 2010 at 4:17 pm, Giovani said:
Boxing promoters should not be too concerned about existing and knowledgable fans because they’ll always be there. Promoters should focus on making it exciting and attracting a new breed of fans. Fair matches. Exciting matches. Trainers should improve their skills so boxers will also improve. But the more money young boxers get, the more people will take up a sport. I mean who in their right mind wants to train for 6 weeks and then get R2000?

Flo what a great overhand right. You did us all proud .
Jason at last some one that can take a punch and give one .It was just a matter of time for this to happen.Jason can NOT take a good punch. It were proven.

You said it steven castle. But no I dont think tommy will ever come down to earth. Its in his blood. His old man was the same. At his house in van dyk park, outside on the walls were written charles oosthuizen south african champion. If you ask me, thats a bit sad. And Left Hook, i still dont rate Elias Tshabalala as a trainer. Isaac is naturally very talented. But I didn’t see any of those skillful moves. Isaac’s hands were low, he jumped in, when he missedd he was off balance. If Elias was that good, he would’ve ironed out those mistakes in the fight. Chelembe was very wild, tommy on the other hand kept fucking low or he held on. Or from the outside he’d throw a long right with his hands low. Well done chelembe, i knew you’d win. Tommy boy, kom terug aarde toe seun. You’re not roy jones

Haha, you guys call isaac a boxer? What a joke man, couldnt even keep his mouthgaurd in his mouth? I thought he was a boxer, instead he looked like he was donating blood from what, about round 6? We should have had a bloodbag there, maybe isaacs blood couldve been better of in a bag than on the canvas? I was laughing the whole time at him, what a joke? All you guys got sumthing against the Gun, let met tell you this, when the rematch happens, im telling you, thats gna be something new? You call your champ a champ, but it seems like he was lucky to grab on a hug the whole time, he lost his mouthguard twice so he doesnt get knocked out, oh well he gets to keep his title a couple o day longer, you go isaac “goldenclinch” chilembe, Gun will get that title! Haha flo my boy, what a fight, im a 100% behind you my man, i think Rodney Berman is right, You are our Next Big Thing, GUN GUN GUN GUN GUN GUN GUN GUN TOMMY GUN

What a night !!!! Worth every cent spent on the tickets ..
Jason Badman Bedeman got knocked real hard. Although I reckon he did very good in rounds 2 and 3. But his opponent was too strong for him, and have to agree, he was fed to a LION who was just too experienced. However, still a huge fan of his !!!! After being beaten to the floor at least twice in the first round, he still came back and delivered good blows in rounds 2 & 3.
Flo Simba !!! His opponent looked abit too old and tired, but still, he had a record of 29wins, 23knockouts if I’m not mistaken? so this guy was definitely not a bum. Flo did good, but he’s experience is still counting agains him. You can see that when he get’s nailed. Promotors, don’t do the same to him as with Jason. Raise him up slowly and carefully, then you’ll have yourself a HUGE champion in a few years to come. And what a knock-out !!!!
Chilemba vs Tommy …..
Chilemba got me irritated with him holding and clinching so much …. but it worked for him in retaining his belt. That was my only problem with him.
He came to the ring as a champion, and he fought like a champion. To Isaac and all his followers, well done on a great fight.. He did so much better against Tommy then what he did against Bolling. Himself and Elias spotted some flaws in Tommy, and they targeted it from round 1. End of the day, it worked out well for them.
Tommy didn’t seem comfortable the entire fight, maybe the pressure was too much. He threw big bombs, numerous times, but it just didnt land.
Left Hook, wont say egg on our faces, but humbled yes. Isaac is still the champ, so we’ll respect him as the champ, until a rematch is arranged (if ever).
Tommy, I’m sure you’ll take this fight as an humbling experience, look at it closely, and work hard on what needs to be changed. You did not disappoint any of us, and you are still the greatest in our eyes, and we’ll keep on supporting you. Get your game plan right, use this draw, and come back stronger, harder, and wiser ………..You’ve got a point to prove in the next fight !!!!!!
(can someone just ask Jody to chew with her mouth shut ?)
