Former SA super middleweight champion is a frustrated fighter! Moreover at age 41, the likeable Thysse realizes only too well that his days in the fistic mart are rapidly nearing an end. “I badly want to fight Rupert Van Aswegen for the national light heavyweight title” said Thysse this morning, “but since we both have the same trainer (Harold Volbrecht) and he doesn’t want us to compete against each other I’m caught between a rock and a hard place”.
Rivals for a number of years, despite never having fought, Thysse versus Van Aswegen would be a sure-fire seller, especially with fans from the East Rand, but until Harold Volbrecht gives his blessings, or one of the two fighters change training camps, the likelyhood of that bout taking place seems remote at best.
“Harold wants me to fight some guy in Poland but after checking the man’s record, I would prefer to go in against Rupert and settle the score as to which one of us is the better boxer once and for all” said Thysse.
An uppercut specialist, Thysse remains the only fighter ever to have beaten Daniel “Billy the Kid” bruwer and he also holds a victory over former Commonwealth champion David Starie.
“I need to fight and this inactivity is really getting to me” said the lean-framed former national titleholder, whom one suspects may soon be issuing an independant challenge for Van aswegen’s light heavyweight crown.
