Golden Gloves Promotions will henceforth be promoting Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu (7-0, 6 knockouts)! The current WBF Pan African cruiserweight and SA cruiserweight champion, the brutal punching Mchunu is regarded as one of the most compelling fighters in the country and hails from Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.
Blessed with instinctive predatory skill and murderous power, Mchunu is 22 years-old and will sign on the dotted line for GGP sometime next week after flying up from Durban with his father Musawenkosi “Alex” Mchunu on Thursday for talks with GGP Promoter Rodney Berman.
“The guy is a riveting talent” said Berman, “and we plan to market him alongside our other glittering array of stars”.
Mchunu Snr confirmed his son’s intentions of joining GGP on Friday morning, by saying; “We are delighted to be teaming up with Golden Gloves Promotions, especially in view of the roll-call of world champions they’ve produced in the past”.
A professional since July 2007, the violent hitting Mchunu won the vacant SA cruiserweight crown in only his third professional fight by halting the respected Patrick Madzinga in the 9th round on February 29, 2008 and after halting Sean Santana in the seventh round in his first title defence, he lifted the vacant WBF Pan African cruiserweight belt in his next outing by stopping Marciano Commey (KO 1) in Bloemfontein! Commey entered the ring with a resume of 18-9-0 and was clearly a fancied performer.
With five victories in as many starts, Mchunu climbed through the ropes to defend both his titles against veteran pugilist Soon Botes in May 2009, and though at an awful disadvantage in terms of experience (Botes had a record of 27-12-0) the fiery Natalian knocked out the former SA champion in the 8th round.
In Mchunu’s last contest, he blasted out former WBU world champion Ruben Groenewald in the 4th round, inflicting brutal punishment in the process.
“With an overall 85.71% knockout average, Mchunu has to be special” said two time Hall of Famer Brian Mitchell. An aggressive southpaw, Mchunu owns a devastating left hook and his right hand is equally as dangerous. Trained by his father, Mchunu, had a prodigious amateur career of over 200 fights, of which he lost only 13. Born on March 4, 1988, he is undeniably one of the handsomest boxers produced in South Africa in years, and his matinee-idol looks and flamboyant style could make him an incredible box-office attraction. Not a natural left hander, Mchunu nevertheless adopted the southpaw stance after participating in traditional Zulu stick fighting as a youth.
Indeed, in the words of Rodney Berman; “I think we have gold in our hands”. Mchunu will feature on the GGP June 18 “BLOCKBUSTER” event at Emperors Palace!
“Insofar as southpaws are concerned, Mchunu is a rarity” said respected boxing personality Jeff Ellis, “because whereas most southpaws are counter punchers, this kid rumbles forward with venomous intent and he fires his punches with the destructive force of a wrecking ball”.

Bravo surly Golden gloves you really making a fan like myself so happy I could thank you enough great choice now the bowl in June is going to be a cracker hold on to your seats ladies and gentlemen the ROCK is in the house. This boy should fight Mulder now that my dear GGP will be a fight not to be forgotten
Ive heard good things about this kid. He did a number on my stable-mate a while back!
Well done GGP. Now you only have to still sign Johnny Muller and you should have all the best this country has to offer at present. I still feel Muller has a better future developing in a great heavyweight rather than Cruiserweight.
Bravo is all I can say. Tabiso is such a talented boxer. So when are you signing the young heavyweight Muller? Having both these fighters under the GGP banner will be a huge draw card for fans. Britt I agree with Martin, Muller should focus on developing as a heavyweight, he has such a bright future.
I’m new to this site but such a huge fan. I say yes, all you still have to do is sign up Johnny Muller whom I believe is the most powerful puncher we have in the heavyweight division. I would also rather see him train and develop as a heavyweight. Having Tabiso fight under GGP is great, his fights are electrifying to watch.
We have been waiting for this one. Watching boxing at Emperors is becoming more exiting with every tournament. I for one am very glad you signed Tabiso. Well said Martin, sign up Muller as well and they will have the best in both divisions. As Muller is still only 19 and he has the talent to become an excellent heavyweight, GGP simply has to sign him as well.
All due respect I like Muller a lot don’t get me wrong an as a heavyweight I think he’ll be much better but just think of that fight man o man what a fight but like we all agree. GGP think of this sign Johnny Muller then you have the Best Super-middleweight in south Africa which is Tommy you have the best Cruiserweight, The Rock , and when you sign Muller my word he will become the best Heavyweight in South Africa in the near further. No doubt

I know there are a lot of politics in this game, behind the scenes negotiations etc. This Mchunu was a good signing. After watching the embarassing S.A heavyweight title fight Between Osborne and Bull, I reckon Johnny will take that title easily when given the opportunity. I personally think Johnny could fight comfortably as a cruiserweight. A battle between these two bone crushers would be explosive to say the least.
Excellent move GGP, Tabiso is a definate move in the right direction. Listen to the fans, sign Muller and you will have the best heavyweight this country has at the moment. This kid is going to go far. You said it Simon, the heavyweight title fight was such an embarassment and Muller is the man. With the right guidance and training this kid is the one to beat. When can we expect the anouncement GGP?
Well said Simon, the heavyweight title fight was boring and really embarrasing. Muller can definately take Big Daddy and Bull. I can’t wait for his next fight on 27 March at Carousel. Hopefully the next time he fights will be at Emperors under GGP???
Amen to that Tanya, hopefully he dose fight then next time under the watchful eye’s of the GGP fans we would love to see him on the same bill as Jason Hekkie and Tommy.
Johnny Muller is a tremendous young talent agreed!
Amen too to that Terry, so when will GGP sign him? As Britt so rightly said, we want to see him fight on these bills for GGP!
GGP can now see what the fans want and what a draw card the young Muller is. Surely this is on the cards Terry and GGP will benefit tremendously by signing Muller. Is this going to happen in the near future? We as fans are so hungry for boxing to be exiting again like in the days of Gerrie Coetzee etc and we feel that Muller, The Rock, Hekkie, Tommy and the Badman can bring us that.
I like thabiso and im sure he wil be a world champion soon he has got good talent i like muller he is a knockout specialist.
Right on Taptap, he is a knock-out artist. I’ve once had the pleasure to see this guy chop wood hence that deadly right hand.
(To Britt) stop dreaming you cant mix sheeps with Buffalos you cant talk about beibut shimenov and that little boy Thabiso in the same sentence.
shimenov trains with don turner( evander holyfields trainer)he has beat numerous world champions name fighters former WBA super middle weight Champion Montel griffin, WBA,Ibf champ Byron Mitchel,WBA light heavyweight champ Gabriell campilo.
Who has Thabiso beat? Patrick madzinga..? sean sentana?
Please get serious
beside: beibut shimenov is worth 250 million dollards.. ineritance from his khazakstan royal family.. he is 26 years and promote his own boxing fights, pays his opponents.. including the next world title the will be staged in california.
Good advice: let Mcunu fight ILUNGA MAKABU, Daniel Bruwer or The The Cold Blooded Zack Mwekassa the all live in johannesburg and let see if he comes out alive…
