Is “Bad Boy” Wasserman For Real?

This writer’s phone rang early this morning, following an article which appeared in The Citizen newspaper regarding the Emperors Palace Box & Dine bill on April 27! “Hey, I see you guys have signed Chaz Wasserman! Now you’ll have a real street fighter on your hands” exclaimed the caller. “Man, Chaz is a former MMA star and street fighter and I’ve seen him in action. The guy is deadly and I’ve no doubt he’ll become a huge hit with fans at Emperors Palace”. Well, on checking out our Golden Gloves website (www.goldengloves.co.za) an hour later, I found another referral to Wasserman’s ability as a street fighter and within an hour, the calls were coming hard and fast! Mind you not all the enthusiasts who took the trouble to have their say were complimentary, and one particular caller had a much different take on the 22-year-old Wasserman, who’ll effectively be making his professional boxing debut at Emperors Palace on April 27 in the super middleweight division.

To quote Mr R: “Wasserman only had a couple of cage fights and I saw both of them. Frankly I don’t think he has a hope of cutting it in the ring, where like his former Southern Suburbs sidekick Jared Lovett, he’ll be short of genuine technique and finesse!”

That the announcement of Wasserman’s defection to the world of pugilism has caused such a stir intrigued your writer enough for me to make several calls of my own and after speaking to a number of fairly knowledgable fight buffs I felt as if we’d been discussing totally different fighters.

Indeed, the polarised views on young Mr Wasserman’s level of talent is such that one could be forgiven for thinking that he’s either going to take the local fight scene by storm, or getting blown away in his first professional outing. “The kid is a typical brawler, nothing more” said one former amateur boxing official, while another of his colleagues felt that the former Theo Wassenaar student had “the ability to go all the way providing he is judiciously managed”. Take your pick, the jury is certainly out on this soon to be ringster!

    Dear Mr. Terry
I maybe don’t have all the money in the world but the money I do have I will put every single cent on Chaz. I can’t describe to you how excited I am about him entering the ring; He is an Elite street fighter but I can assure you Uncle Harold will changes he’s ways. I predict this guy will blow South African boxing by storm. And become a world class boxing sensation.

Dont stick all your cash on him just yet. If he hangs around guys like Lovett then he may be a bit of a headcase with discipline problems…

I haven’t seen this guy in action but have heard of him so let’s wait and see what he is made of. Give Mr Wasserman a shot and let’s see if he has the goods. If he producers a knockout then he would have silenced his critics. But lets face it.. who is he going to be up agaist??? I’m expecting nothing less than a knock out.

Chaz is dedicated and very wel disciplined, having trained with him i know that he has what it takes in the ring to go all the way. He no longer has any ties to Jared, he stands alone and fights alone.
i have all the faith the world that he will silence the critics and prove that he is a skilled fighter with a big heart.
