Unbeaten junior lightweight prospect Joey Stiglingh (9-0, with 5 knockouts) could be on course for a fight with Grant “The Fireball” Fourie (12-2-1, with 7 knockouts). That is if Golden Gloves Promoter Rodney Berman and Stiglingh’s trainer Colin Nathan have their way. “It would be a really compelling fight and providing everyone agrees, we’d like to stage the contest during September at Emperors Palace” said Berman.
A member of the ‘fighting’ Fourie clan, Grant is nephew to the late Pierre Fourie, who fought for the world light heavyweight title on four separate occasions during the 1970’s; twice against Bob Foster and twice against Victor Galindez.
Grant’s father Louie was a fine junior middleweight who many believed had as much natural talent as his older brother but lacked the necessary breaks and dedication to fulfil his potential. That Louie now trains Grant has raised more than a few eyebrows and while no one doubts the Fireball’s level of commitment and skill it is generally felt that the 28-year-old lightweight has yet to realize his potential.
“A bout between Stiglingh and Fourie would be a sizzling encounter and would make a great deal of sense at this junction of their careers” said Berman. GGP matchmaker Ruben Rasodi agrees and has already sounded out the Stiglingh camp with a view to signing the fight. Man-about-boxing Jeff Ellis always has a definite opinion on any subject and being the thorough professional that he is, made a telling comment on the fight.
“Fourie needs to get his career back on track after earlier losses to Jason Bedeman and Sydney Maluleka and a win over an undefeated boxer like Stiglingh would definitely bolster his stocks” said Ellis. “Similarly, if Stiglingh manages to beat Fourie, GGP would know they have a burgeoning young champion and Joey would have placed a new price tag on his incisive knuckles”. Berman supports Ellis’ reasoning and added, “Look, in contests like this there’s no real loser. A victory for Grant would certainly reignite his career, while at the same time give us a clearer indication of how much Joey still has to learn. Conversely a Stiglingh triumph would mean that the 21-year-old Rosettenville fighter has matured at an amazing rate and depending on what happened in the fight, which figures to go down to the wire, Fourie could pick up where he left off and compete in one of either two or even three weight brackets”.

This would definitely be a fight worth watching’ judging by the odds, well lets go 50-50 on this one. The one’ whom wants it the most on the night, will be granted victorious but it could possible go the distance and become a fe’tish of combinations and exchanges of pure punches, really this is fight worth making a main bout of a box and dine evening, lets hear it from the fans what’s the odds and the predictions?

Wow this should be a great fight. I’m a big Grant fan but Joey has improved so much and can definately take a punch. I don’t think it would be so easy for Fourie to win Joey.

Joey is going to give Fourie a fight. Fourie
has wasted so much time. Joey has got just as much experiance as him if we consider his amature days he must have at least 80 to 100 fights on his cards.

Fourie vs. Stigling. That would be an awesome fight, especially for lovers of the ‘art’ of boxing. My money would be on Fourie, I think he has a little too much power but it would be a very technical fight. I’d make a serious effort to watch this live.

I must say, I have seen Stigling as a amateur And he was a great Joburg and SA Champ.
The Boy always had a good attitude when going in to a fight.
I think Fourie wiil have to fight for he’s Moneys here.
Fourie is a great looking Boxer in my eyes and boy he has heart.
Look if you can take big punches from Jason Bedeman, then you know the boy has fight in him.
Good luck to both fighters and well done to GGP.

I’ve been reliably informed that the proposed Stiglingh/Fourie bout, which we hoped could take place on the undercard of our September 18 bill, will not happen. Apparently the Fourie camp only want to return to action in November. Pity, it may have been a lively encounter.
