Johnny Muller became Golden Gloves’ latest champion as he destroyed Ronnie Lategan in a single round last night to capture the vacant SA light-heavyweight title at Emperors Palace.
Fighting before a capacity crowd at the “Christmas Cracker” box ‘n dine tournament, Muller abandoned any feeling-out period for all-out attack. He rocked Lategan early with his buzzsaw style and when it became clear that Lategan had little to offer by way of resistance, his corner wisely threw the towel in. The bout was called off at the 1:49 mark.
In easily the best fight of the night, unbeaten Joey Stiglingh maintained his record with a superb eight-round points win over Warren Joubert. Youth was served as the 22-year-old established a good early rhythm and never let up on his way to a split decision win (75-76, 75-76, 76-75). Fighting in the junior-lightweight division, Joubert gave as good as he got, although he let himself down in the fifth by head-butting Stiglingh. He had a point deducted, which ultimately made the world of difference.
Stiglingh, by contrast, was patient and cool as he saw out the fight with a flurry of punches. Remember the name – he’ll go far.
At middleweight, meanwhile, Lee Dyer and Sylvester Zaki turned in what oldtimers would call a barnburner. From the start, it was evident their bout wouldn’t last the distance, Zaki throwing huge left hooks and Dyer countering with his educated right hand.
Dyer, who hails from KwaZulu Natal, finally ended matters in the second and was flailing away with a helpless Zaki on the ropes when the referee called the action off.
After the closeness of their first fight, Ashley Dlamini made certain of matters this time around with a dominant two-round win over Raymond Bloem. Bloem looked strangely listless from the start, while Dlamini got into his stride immediately. Trained by Colin Nathan, Dlamini put Bloem down twice in the second round before Bloem was saved from further assault by the referee.
It was much the same in a welterweight bout between debutants Zane Mundell and Sanele Mbatha. Mundell attacked early and was rewarded in the second with a TKO after Mbatha was twice battered to the canvas.
Brian Mitchell’s debutant, Alexander Jonker, produced the fastest finish of the night, his overhand right at the 20-second mark of the opening round sending Thulani Majola to la-la land.
In a women’s bout that opened the tournament, Rita Mwrebi captured a split decision win against southpaw Shayvonne Pattison. Both gave as good as they got and an appreciative crowd applauded both at the conclusion.
* In an auction for Baby Jake Matlala, R46 000 was raised for three separate items, top price going to a magnificent Brian Mitchell/Nelson Mandela item that included a signed glove.

I don’t see how the Joey / Warren was close.
In my eyes Joey won convincingly and didn;t lose a round in my opinion. Joey has a wonderful style and is an excellent boxer.

I have to agree with The Truth, there is no way this could be a split decision. Stigling won the fight, simple as that. Congratulations to SA’s new Champ, Johnny, you did us proud and you looked the part. Christo, I also saw the little guy after Johnny won, you are right, he was shouting, yeeee pappie and throwing his little arms in the air! Great man great! We sat two tables from them and that definately topped the night.

Hope “Left Hook” wasn’t a betting man, because Colin’s fighters seem to keep winning.
But, there is always hope maybe Colin will throw “Left Hook” another bone to call his own.
Well done Joey, Ashley and Colin.

Joey and Warren – your fight on 30 November was a display of boxing not seen in SA for a long …long time. For years to come your fight will be discussed by boxing fans. I could mention every and any punch in the book and state that you I saw that punch in a fight between Joey Stigling and Warren Joubert. Love and respect, Uncle Jeff
