Colin Nathan and top trainer Freddie Roach pictured in the US last week
Top trainer Colin Nathan headed straight to the beach in Cape Town his week, which he probably deserved after three weeks’ networking and training in the US.
Nathan returned from a fortnight in Los Angeles after spending his first week at the World Boxing Council convention in Las Vegas.
“Unbelievable,” he remarked. “The gala itself was proclaimed to be the most prestigious gathering of ex-champions in history. There were 90 in all, including Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Sugar Ray Leonard, Evander Holyfield, Oscar De La Hoya, Christy Martin . . . the list went on and on.”
Top boxing figure Bob Yalen took Nathan under his wing and introduced him to all the movers and shakers; doubly important as he was representing Golden Gloves.
Nathan backed the Golden Gloves’ corner and found a willing co-conspirator in Lou Di Bella, the US-based partner of Rodney Berman.
“Lou was one of the most powerful people at the ratings meeting and fought hard for his boxers, including Tommy Oosthuizen. He is a brilliant man to have in Golden Gloves’ corner,” said Nathan.
The second part of his trip was spent at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card gym in West Hollywood. Although none of the marquee names were in residence, Nathan still absorbed as much as he could from the world’s pre-eminent boxing trainer.
“I’ve come back with so many tricks up my sleeve,” said the South African. “I stayed at Freddie’s apartment and he was very generous with his time and sharing his knowledge. I can’t wait to apply the things I learned. The whole point was to interact with Freddie and that’s what I did. I especially appreciated his farewell gift to me: the mitts used in the 24/7 television series.”

Good Day Mr. Berman.
I think Andre Dirrell would be a good opponent for Tommy.
Below some of the reasons in my opinion:
1. Similiar heights Tommy is 6’4″ – Andre is 6’2″
2. Both southpaws(Tommy has never faced a southpaw)so this will be a good preparation fight before a possible fight with Bute.
3. Similiar number of fights Tommy on 18 – Andre on 21.
4. Exactly the same KO ratios – 66,67%
5. Andre is fresh off a KO win and an easy fight, so might be willing to take a fight on the 11th of February, especially at the MGM grand as he is looking to work his way back up towards a title shot.
6. They are both hungry and this could just turn out to be a great match up.

Just Another Boxing Lover.

I think its great that nathan wants to learn. But im not sure how its gonna benefit him. even if he’s had a few amateur fight, he’d be ok but he’s never had anything. So im just trying to figure out how will colin know what goes through a boxer’s mind, in the gym, in a fight, in round 9 when he’s taking a bad beating. How does he motivate such a fighter if he himself doesnt know how it
