Power and Pride tickets go on sale

Flo Simba – readying himself to attack the White Buffalo on June 4

Ticket sales have opened at Computicket for the Power and Pride tournament at Emperors Palace on June 4.

With interest at an almost unparalleled level, promoter Rodney Berman revealed that most of the top-end (R400) tickets had been snapped up, while others (R200-R300) were moving nicely.

“It’s the middle of the month, so this is very encouraging,” said Berman. “Fans who want the best seats will have to move fast because these are being snapped up.”
Ironically, Berman says he last witnessed such excitement almost 10 years ago to the day – when Lennox Lewis was in South Africa to defend his heavyweight title against Hasim Rahman.

All signs point to the heavyweight bout – Flo Simba (the Black Panther) against Fransie Botha (the White Buffalo) – being the big attraction, although there’s a good mix of talent on the undercard that also deserves recognition.

Berman has had reports from the various camps, each of whom sound bullish for the mid-year tournament. “The eyes of South Africa and beyond are going to be on them. They want to excel and enhance their reputations.”

Flo needs to learn to be patient, bob and weave, pick his punches, work the body with hooks and uppercuts, prise open his opponents’ defence, and not load up on every punch. Sooner or later he is going to meet a fighter who is not going to be overwhelmed by Flo’s punching power, and who will not fall over as soon as he gets hit with a clean punch. Someone who punches back with intent. Someone who has the defensive expertise to avoid Flo’s jab-jab-right hand combination. When that happens, Flo is going to have to be able to go to work scientifically and methodically, cutting off the ring, working the body to bring his opponent’s guard down, and all the while using head movement and body sway to avoid being hit. Nobody can succeed by simply rushing every opponent with massive right hands and expecting them all to fall over early. Ask Courage Tshabalala. Courage was a bigger heavyweight than Flo, and he hit just as hard. He was just as much of a sensation in the early 90′s, maybe even more so. He also started his career blasting eveyone out in a round or two. He moved to the States and became a rising prospect there. But he never really acquired the skills he needed, and basically just relied on his huge punch. His star fizzled out when he started getting KO’ed by journeymen like Brian Scott and Darrol Wilson. Flo Simba should learn a lesson from where Courage went wrong. Don’t believe your own hype, and don’t believe that you can knock everyone out early. Even Tyson couldn’t do that.

One more thing,I went on to Boxrec just to see the rankings of Tommy and Gare.
To be fare I like Tommy but if he is ranked 12 and Gare is 24th, why would Tommy fight some one that who is 12 places under him?
I know its to say he is South Africas true number one fighter, but he is taking a chance with that ranking with Gare.
Tommy please keep your hand up, remember Gare is shorter then you, so he is going to throw big over hands, chin down Tommy.

@Jonathan, Jason Bedeman is an average boxer and it was shown in his last fight. He comes accross very arrogant and not likable at all. My opinion is that he does not have a future in boxing.

I am a former pro-boxer and are trying my best to be there
at 04 June 2011 but am I surprised that nobody at the computicket (Money Market) Shoprite Checkers are able to help me – On their system there is no such tournament at the Emperors Palace -:

Frans Botha and I were school mates as well and I realy want to be there.

    I Urgently need 2 tickets.

My wife is a Winner Circle member at the Emperors Palace – please advise what to do to get hold of such tickets (I do realise that the ring seats are sold out, but when we phone there were still R300 and R200 tickets available)

    Thanks
