Roman Promises To Fight Like Mexican Legends Of Old!

Mexico’s Saul Roman (37-6) has promised to fight like some of his illustrious countrymen of old when he takes on Tommy “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen (10-0) at Emperors Palace tomorrow night on a Golden Gloves Promotions Box & Dine bill. Indeed, through his interpreter the well-chiselled Roman explained: “I come from a country where warriors wear their hearts on their sleeves and like legendary heroes such as Carlos Zarate, Ruben Olivares, Julio Cesar Chavez, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales and Salvador Sanchez, I will never enter a ring with the thought of losing”. Given the fact that Roman is far shorter than the power-hitting Tommy Gun, his comment is noteworthy and augurs well for a high-voltage battle that may end before the 10-round mark.

“Oosthuizen is obviously a very good talent, otherwise he would never have won three international titles in one year” added Roman, who is eagerly anticipating his duel with the bean-pole fighter from Boksburg. “But at age 21 he is still very, very inexperienced and I’ll be targeting his lengthy body from the opening bell”.

Trainer Harold Volbrecht, however, believes that the Mexican may instead rely on overhand rights in an attempt to beat Oosthuizen and has warned his exciting young charge that he can expect a fierce and unremitting battle from the first round. “These Mexican guys are tearaway fighters and they have no reverse gear” said Volbrecht. “As such I’ve advised Tommy, whose an instinctive counter-puncher –as most southpaws are – to rely on countering Roman’s frontal assault with uppercuts and hooks and notwithstanding Roman’s reputation as a blistering puncher, we figure to halt him inside eight rounds”.

Golden Gloves Promoter Rodney Berman certainly expects a torrid fight and has cautioned Oosthuizen to rely on his skills to earn him victory. “A lot of these fellows from Mexico love to turn every contest into a street fight and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Roman comes out with both guns blazing from the outset”.

While most local experts expect the unbeaten South African to emerge triumphant, more than a few believe he may have to pick himself off the canvas to win the fight.

“That’s when we’ll really be able to gauge how good Oosthuizen truly is” said GGP matchmaker Ruben Rasodi.

I won’t disagree with you Mr. Terry this will be a step up in class for our champion but Thomas will prove once again to the whole of South-Africa that he’ll become the best Super-Middleweight that ever stepped in a square ring. Thomas my friend I will be praying for you so much today if God’s in your corner no opponent will overcome you.
    Amen.

The best super middleweight who ever stepped into a ring? Aren’t you being a little presumptious Britt? The man is only 21-years-old and needs considerable grooming over the next few years. Moreover, haven’t you ever heard of a former super middleweight great named Roy Jones?

The problem for Tommy is that he just happens to be in the most talent-stacked division around at the moment. Its Andre Wards house! Once you are through all the challengers in the Super 6 Classic then you still have guys like Lucian Bute and Paul Williams.

By the time Tommy is in a position to challenge for world titles Ward, Williams, Allan Green and Andre Dirrell will still be around (Who knows were Paul Williams will settle…?). Thats a tough bunch of names to compare yourself to no matter which way you look at it!

This young kid KOd Saul Roman!?!?!?!?
Geez. Expect big things from Thomas.

Terry, I’m from WI and I’ve heard people talking about him (boxing fans of course), but still. For people to be talking about a 11-0 kid from South Africa up in Wisconsin…. that’s saying alot.
