SA’s greatest anoints Muller as ‘the next big thing’

Ronnie Lategan, left, and Johnny Muller, who clash for the vacant SA light-heavyweight title tonight

Brian Mitchell isn’t in the habit of dishing out praise, but he is happy to make an exception for light-heavyweight star Johnny Muller, who fights Ronnie Lategan at Emperors Palace tonight.

“It’s been a long time since we had a top light-heavy, but I reckon Johnny could become as good as Pierre Fourie,” said the former world champion, who will be in Muller’s corner tonight. This is because chief trainer Harold Volbrecht is in Mexico helping Lovemore Ndou prepare for a bout.
“I like him as a light-heavyweight, especially as he’s making the weight easily,” added Mitchell. “The puppy fat has fallen away and now he looks the part . . . he can be unbelievable.”

Mitchell says boxing insiders are hoping Muller not only wins tonight, but gains a stranglehold on the division. “It’s been quiet for too long. Daniel Bruwer was okay, but his indiscipline let him down. This is Johnny’s chance to shake things up.”

Muller is unbeaten in nine outings, having scored five KO wins and two draws, his best result a TKO win over Patrick Madzinga back in July.
Mitchell is predicting a two to three-round fight, with Muller’s power proving too much for Lategan.
Boxing starts at 7.30pm.

If johnny muller is all that then he’ll knock lategan out in 1 round. If not then he can hang up his gloves

For the first time ever, I’m going to have to agree with you on this one -Giovani- If Johnny struggles knocking Ronnie out or stopping him, he should reconsider.

But like my predictions has failed me in the past, hopefully it won’t this time around @ Anton.

May the best man take the title home with pride.

Who is going to the event tonight?

I have my fingers crossed for Muller but know that Lategan is such a worthy opponent that Muller must not go wild. Best of luck to both boxers but I hope Muller takes it.

Really dont understand how the judges scored Joey and warrens fight. split decision 75-76, 76-75, 76-75. Joey clearly beat warren. so without the point deduction for warrens head but the judges would have actually given the decision to Warren. Load of rubish! Johnny is looking good, light heavy is where he belongs! hope he can stay at that weight

Flo Simba Fan, I don’t think you will recognize a lucky punch even when its coming your way. Muller overshadowed Lategan from the first second. Latergan was just not in Muller’s league
