Southern Suburbs fighter Joey Stiglingh (7-0, with 4 knockouts) could emerge as one of Golden Gloves Promotions’ brightest young stars in 2010. This opinion is shared by several knowledgeable ringside pundits, among them veteran matchmaker Ruben Rasodi. “He is a terrific little fighter” said Rasodi, who’s been around the fight game for over forty years. “In fact he could become a real crowd puller next year given that he’ll feature on most of our tournament undercards”.
Certainly Stiglingh’s progress has been keenly followed by GGP CEO Rodney Berman, who recently remarked, “I like the look of this kid, he has balance, rhythm and a rasping right hand. Mind you, he still needs to learn that he doesn’t have to win every fight on a knockout”.
Not that there’s anything wrong with Stiglingh’s boxing skills, but lets face it; the public love a puncher and in this regard Joey has stopped four of his last five opponents en route to establishing a claim as one of Berman’s most promising young newcomers.
A professional since September 2008, Stiglingh won his first two bouts on points before halting Gert Aries in the fourth round. He built on that success by fashioning inside-the-distance wins over Vusumzi Manyoni (W TKO 4), Elias Mayo (W TKO 1) and Solly Mokoka (W KO 3), before being forced to win a hard fought 4-rounder against the extremely capable Stephen Ntshingila at Emperors Palace.
Trained by Colin Nathan, the likeable Stiglingh is one of the most dedicated boxers in Gauteng and though he started his career as a featherweight, there is a strong supposition that his future lies in the junior lightweight ranks.
“Joey gets better all the time and like his stablemate Hekkie Budler, he is completely disciplined” said Nathan.
Man-about-boxing Jeff Ellis is another admirer of Stiglingh’s and believes that by the end of 2010 the Southern Suburbs fighter will be on the fringes of international recognition.
“That’s highly plausible” said Ellis. “Indeed if he’s kept as busy as he was in 2009, during which he had five bouts, Joey could be well in line for an African Union title bout and possibly even bigger things”.
For now though the jury is still out, as Promoter Berman is so fond of saying!

I think Joey has faught well. I actually like his “amatuer” style. A lot of lateral movement, throws clean meaningful punches. A boxer, not a brawler. Good luck to him in 2010.

I think again they all start with that “amateur style” of boxing but most of the time I think it’s up to Colin to teach him the chess game of boxing. I think we have some prospect on hands here, all the blessing for Joe and 2010.
