The finishing touches have been put to “The Young Guns” tournament at Emperors Palace on March 1.
There are six bouts featuring the cream of SA’s young talent, including Joey Stiglingh and Johnny Muller.
Muller heads up the fight card with the first title defence of his SA light-heavyweight belt, having belted Ronnie Lategan inside a round for the championship in his last outing.
His opponent is rugged Roedolf Venter, who has 11 wins in 14 fights and most recently stopped Rudi Bruwer in five rounds. He can punch and Muller would be well advised not to mix too much.
Rising junior-lightweight prospect Joey Stiglingh goes in against Sam Sithole in an eight-rounder, determined to pick up where he left off last time, winning a rousing encounter against Warren Joubert.
Stiglingh looked superb in sparring this week and will be determined to prolong his unbeaten record.
Heavyweight Zack Mwekassa plans to rebound off two successive defeats against little-known Ghanaian Epiphane Pipi. Trainer Harold Volbrecht is confident Mwekassa will turn things around and return to the winning ledger.
One of the most anticipated fights of the night will be the rematch between Joubert and Takalani Dengala. Despite his in and out record, Dengala gave Joubert all he could handle in their first fight. Joubert admits he was off-form, but is determined to settle things the second time round.
Exciting bantamweight Morne Bothma will have his third outing at Emperors Palace against Ronnie Chiloane, while the bill will open with a four-round welterweight scrap between Godfrey Mabunda and Bongo Lipembo.

Really hope johnny is on form, Roedolf has skill but lacks the punching power of true light heavyweights. If the fight goes the distance its going to be close but I reckon Johnny’s power will be to much for Roedolf and he’ll stop him in the 8th. Let’s hope his fit!!

I think Johnny will stop him before the 3rd round.

Can’t wait to see Muller vs Venter. My money is on young Muller with a KO in the 2nd round.

True words nomercy, although Venter has great boxing skills, I doubt he can take the devastating power of Muller.

Fantastic bill, will this be televised? If Johnny is on top form he should have no problem retaining his title.

don’t underestimate Venter, you will be surprized!!!!

People don’t throw away Roedolf Venter, his not Ronnie, he always comes into a fight fit and ready and has plenty of skill, and what he lacks in power he has in speed and footwork! Johnny is going to have a fight on his hands not a work in the park like the last hasbeen he fought. He has what it takes to win, as long as he comes in prepared for 12 rounds and we’ll see what the wait pulling does to him in the later rounds.
And when he wins its on to isaac chilemba!!

Just 6 months ago Harold told people how useless Zack Mwekassa is .Today (17 feb)at the press conference he told every one how good he is .So it looks to me if you not with Harold ,you are totally Sh#t and if you are in his camp you are the best in the world.
So if Johnny,Tommy or Flo leaves harold how Sh#t are they going to be then.
It looks that you are only good if you box for him. What does he think off himself.
Zack’s opponent 1 win ,1 loss now his going to look good fighting a bum.
the only reason harold got Zack is so that he does not fight Flo.
The only 2 fights that looks like worth watching is the main fight and the main supporting fight
I like Johnny but the underdog might take this one if Johnny think this is a walk in the park

Ringside, I know for a fact Johnny does not think this fight is a walk in the park. He has such respect for Roedolf and his boxing skills. Johnny trains very hard and takes this fight very seriously. Another thing, I supported Johnny even when he was boxing with Peet Bothma and should he leave Harold one day, I will continue to support him.

I will be a Muller fan no matter who his trainer is Ringside.

I have seen many of both Muller and Venter’s fights and have tremendous respect for both of them. Yes, Venter has great footwork and speed but now so does Muller and Muller has explosive power. I am a fan of both but I think young Muller will win.

Johnny is in a class of he’s own this time around.
The boy has lots of power in both hands, youth and speed on he’s side.
Venter will have to come with a smart game plan to work this kid out to lift the SA light heavyweight strap.
Johnny to stop Venter in the 4th.

I hope all the best for young Johnny and believe that he has this one in the bag, but concerning nomercy’s comment on him fighting Chilemba? It would be suicide, Chilemba is too good at BOXING and he won’t have trouble handling Mullers power.

Chilemba is the next step up for Johnny, its pointless beating S A boxers, he’ll have to step up sometime and I think it is know! But time will tell and we will see what comes his way!! All the best to him!
February 21, 2011 at 12:26 pm, olaf said:
TheReader, don’t be too sure about that! This Muller kid has improved so much in speed and skill, and damn can he punch. I think Muller will surprise everyone and give Chilemba a run for his money.

Don’t ever think Johnny Muller would be a walk in the park for Chilemba nomercy.

I don’t know TheReader, Muller has shown tremendous improvement and as Jono B says, he is in a class of his own at the moment. Chilembe will have his hands full with this kid.

Amen to that Jason, I will also support my boy Johnny win or loose, no matter who his trainer is. I got so much respect for this young lad, the way he carries himself in and outside the ring, the way he speaks about and supports other boxers even if they could be his opponents next time around. We have a true gentleman of boxing here.
February 21, 2011 at 12:54 pm, Martin said:
I agree Jason, this kid has a fan in me for life. I have only met him once but have seen him many times at other tournaments with other fighters and him being a supporter. One of the most humble people I have ever seen.

Let me put things straight, I’m a huge johnny fan and I’m saying that him and chilemba will be a great fight as it is the only opponent currently good enough for him! Its just that we mustnt underestimate Venter as he has good speed and skill and has boxed plenty more rounds that muller. Muller also has to pull weight that always catches up to you in later rounds!
@Rian, no boxer on this earth spars 12rounds everyday unless you are superman or you trainer is an idiot. Sparring takes to much out of a fighter to do it everyday!

If Muller spars 12 rnds everyday….damn…. his not going to last very long at this game!
