Tommy Gun fired

tommy-gun-fired

Barely a handful of days into the new year, Tommy Oosthuizen’s career potentially lies in tatters.

The IBO super-middleweight champion has been pulled off a major international bill in Canada on January 18 and has also been shown the door by Golden Gloves.

In a dramatic start to 2014, a furious Rodney Berman confirmed that he had “washed his hands” of the rebellious fighter in the wake of an apparent bicycle crash that had left him injured. Worse still, Berman received word that Oosthuizen was six kilograms above the light-heavyweight limit and hadn’t a hope of being fit to face unbeaten Eleider Alvarez on an HBO bill in less than a fortnight.

Berman blew his gasket, saying that he wasn’t prepared to tolerate Oosthuizen’s habitual nonsense.

Oosthuizen’s indiscipline had been a mounting concern for Golden Gloves, not least when he ran into weight troubles in 2013 and there were reports of bad behaviour.

Berman read the fighter the riot act, but it appears not to have worked with Oosthuizen again in terrible shape ahead of a key international fight.

Last year he came close to blowing things with a sub-par showing against Brandon Gonzales that left HBO, among others, unimpressed.

The boxer followed that up by ballooning ahead of his fight against Ezequiel Maderna, which came close to being scrapped.

The show in Canada was his chance to get back into the big time and confirm his talent on a major international tournament.

“He’s done!” said an incandescent Berman. “He’s had so many chances and blown every one. Golden Gloves is the promoter of champions, of men of credibility, good standing and dignity. Tommy has let us all down. Fighters are meant to be role models, but he’s fallen very short.”

Trainer Harold Volbrecht, who tried in vain to keep Oosthuizen on a short leash, is said to be distraught at developments.

Berman admitted that he had been embarrassed by the shambles, not least because of his ties with the World Boxing Council and the Canadian promoters, who now have to scramble to sign another opponent.

Well, it was coming. I said last year that he should stay of the xmas pie and alcohol. He should stay in gym, but as we can see, he has no regard for his career and is more interested in galavanting around partying. I feel sorry for him and i hope he can one day get back to the Tommy of 3 years ago..But i have to say, well done to Mr B, i would have done the same..6kg over with a few days before the fight is ridiculous and there can be no excuse..Shame on you Tommy, you let down many fans, including youngsters and school kids who looked up to you..You let down your sponsors, your family, your fans..May you soon see the light or it could be the end for you..cheers

Sad day for Sa Boxing, we all know how patient uncle rod has been with Tommy and all the chances he has been given. Boxers would have given there left leg for half those opportunities.

This is the most telegraphed punch I have seen for a long time. As Dilo said, this situation has been building up since the Johnson fight, which was the last time Tommy looked sharp and hungry. In every fight since then, Tommy has gotten steadily worse. His defence, timing and workrate deteriorated drastically, and he repeatedly had weight problems. He should have lost to Gonzales. The Maderna fight could and probably should have been a draw. Rumours of alcohol issues have been circulating for a long time, so much so that it’s pretty much an open secret by now. Before any of this can change, Tommy has to want the change. But it doesn’t appear that he wants it.

Sadly we expected this. Thomas you have talent very few boxers have, you are signed with the most successful promotor in the country, a trainer who have gone to so many lengths to save you from yourself, a sponsor who does more than he has to, sparring partners who give their all to help you train, even though they have been taking media beatings because they want to help you and care about you, still you make the choice to follow a damaging path. Sad day for boxing in SA. I still hope you will not throw away your talent Tommy.

In my opinion, and call me crazy, but from what I heard from the gym guys Muller was giving Thomas a hard time in gym, even having an edge in sparring so he must have improved quite a bit. So replacing Thomas with either Ryno or Muller might be a good thing.

You’re a disgrace to the boxing world man GGP should’ve let the fight with Ryno vs Tommy went ahead I bet my bottom dollar Ryno would’ve knocked you out even if you are 6 kilograms heavier. Shame on you mate you had the whole world in your hands and you’ve wasted your talents on booze and partying your sponsors is gonna take all their sponsors back so start looking for a day job. Total disgrace to the sport like I said before why can’t white SA fighters not have dicipline .

What is upseting is that many SA boxers will never get the oppurtunities Tommy got nomater how talented they are..They may never be discovered..Tommy treated boxing with disregard and boxing has now started to return the favor.
I used to be hard on Van Heerden for boasting around, but at least he is dedicated to the sport and leaves nothing to chance..He is always fit and i will give Chris full credit..Tommy has 10 times the talent, but wasted it..This will go down is SA boxing history as the most talent wasted

That is very sad news, I would have thought he learnt his lesson after a “car crash” put him out of contention to fight Michael Bolling for the Super-middleweight IBO title a few years ago where Isaac Chilembe took the fight on short notice and won the title.

I think this is another one of his “accidents” attempting to excuse his bad behaviour. Tommy should have left his fighting to the ring. What a waste of great talent.

Maybe he need to sort out his peronal life.I still believe he can make it big. Maybe work with a manager like brian that no the up and downs from boxing will sort every thing out. And one day when he maybe turn everything around he can pay rodney berman back with big fights.

Joyi, a great talent who was almost wasted, but know has a chance to shine..
Ryno – an up and comer who seems to be diciplined and must be in line for bigger fights this year..
Some other good fighters who i have not mentioned as well as some good propects..The International/MonteCarlo events going strong..
If Tommy taught that he made GGP, then he must think again..
Let me put this straight, in months from now, people must not say that we were bad mouthing Tommy, look at him now etc etc..Tommy has let the sport down and hopefully if he gets back on track, he will be the one to appologise to his fans, promoter, manager, trainer and sponsors and not come with the “look at me now” attitude, even if he joins a new promoter and becomes world champion, the SA fans will still remember his behaviour and his disregard for his fans which is happening now

Hope Tommy is surrounded with positive people at this time. Boxing is a tough sport everyone’s opinion fades away when you get in the ring. Like Harold always says, Tommy has age on his side and my opinion would be for Tommy not to chase after other promoters, sponsors or trainers but to take a year off, grow up clean himself up and come back stronger. It seems like the boxing community in SA are quick to break one another down. But will always talk to one another except for a few that got ‘divorced’. We still love you Tommy Gun and will always respect you see this as a turning point in your life and career.

Surely as his management team you cannot stand by and let this destroy his career and if you are not able to assist him and get him back on track release him from his contract so that he may be free to find somebody that will help him. Tommy is a grown man and a professional sportsman at that. You can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. I think Harold has done more to try and help Thomas than any other trainer would. As Thomas’s trainer, I think Harold also has limited power as to how far he can go outside of boxing. The decision must be made by Thomas that he wants to be helped and the support should come from his close family and friends. Fact is Thomas should realize that he is wasting his talent on things that will destroy him and that he seriously needs help and his immediately family should support him 100%.

They have absolutely NO respect for neither Tommy nor his direct family, the only respect they have is for the joyride they have on Tommy’s expense! It is sad to see someone who had grown up in front of you, now having his life in such a mess. Tommy pick yourself up and open your eyes so you can start seeing what you are busy doing in your life! I have known Tommy, his parents and his siblings for many years and without a doubt I can say what good people they are. You can never change the past but you and only you can better your own future. Get rid of the rubbish friends in your life and start over with the true and loyal friends & family whom you know will ALWAYS stand by you. Pick your career up and change for the better. You are a good young man and you have to go back to the roots & find the real Tommy again. God bless & all the best. Cheers.

I read (in the boxing crazy East London based-Daily Dispatch newspaper) that Oosthuizen was allegedly drinking in a pub in Boksburg I’ve the festive season and got into a fight where his nose and eye we’re bust up. This may explain the bicycle accident excuse (just repeating what I read, I wouldn’t know). The newspaper also alleges that Oosthuizen was also arrested for drunken driving over this period. This would all seem to corroborate what other bloggers have talked about with respect to alcohol abuse.

I can’t believe you are still talking about Johnny vs Ryno, come on…
The difference between Tommy fighting Ryno is that Ryno is Top 15 in the WBC, so it would mean fighting someone who is higher ranked than your previous opponent…so it makes sense, going backwards doesn’t..
But this topic and fight has been done and is in the past with both outcomes the same…
Oh and just so you know, if you give someone enough chances, there will always be a chance for a LUCKYpunch…as that is the only Way Johnny can ever beat Ryno!!!>

      > Hahahahaha! “NEW Johnny Muller” what a joke. Just because people claim he got the better of a clearly disinterested Tommy Oosthuizen in sparring doesn’t mean that Johnny has improved. As far as I’ve been told his sparring with Tommy has always been competitive even when Tommy was doing well. This happens with people who spar together a lot and who get used to each other.

I’m sorry but I’ve got no more sympathy for tommy. He is screwing up his own life. Boxing use to be his passion and somewhere along the line something went badly wrong. At this point he is to involved with his drugs and partying. He is messing with the law and trouble is following him around. Someone should bring him back down to earth coz he isn’t the big shot boxer he use to be.
