Tommy Oosthuizen went back to school this week.

What a treat the more than 500 strong learners from Oosterlig High School in Boksburg were in for. The well-spoken IBO super-middleweight champion was a hit from the time he arrived until his departure.

After displaying his hand speed on the pads with trainer Harold Volbrecht, Oosthuizen got down to chatting to the students. In a motivating speech he urged the pupils to commit to the time they have in school. He captivated the audience when discussing various aspects of the fight game – how he responded when cut during a championship bout, his training programme, his diet and his mental state before the fights. The questions kept coming and finally he was asked to predict the outcome of his bout with Serge Yannick at Emperors Palace on March 3. The modest fighter said he wanted to end the bout early to give notice to American fans that he was on his way with his belt firmly around his waist.

With an added bonus SA’s best-ever boxer, Brian Mitchell, hosted proceedings and when all was said and done Oosthuizen, Volbrecht and Mitchell began the task of signing autographs.

Well done Tommy, love it.. This is the kind of example we need. A boxer who takes boxing back to his roots and motivates youngsters to aspire for a better life.. Tommy, and other boxers, please do not forget rural South African, places were boxing is loved, especially the Eastern Cape, were there is so much talent, but a lack of mentors, teachers and people to look up to.. I am glad when i see boxers willing to live a giving lifestyle. Most champions, after collecting millions from boxing, forget the people who cheered for them… I will give you an example, Mayweather was forced to make a donation to a womans rights group after he was sentenced for battery. He never did anything before that, and how many millions has he collected.. So keep it up. Mr Berman, lets do this more often with more boxers..Must the boxer must be willing to do it and not forced..cheers

@ Dilo one question how many world champion and SA champions came out of the Eastern Cape?

How many of them have given back to there rural roots and then post “don’t forget”.

Funny thing is there is only a hand full of Sports men that give back and the rest expect.

There are 10 big Prem soccer clubs in SA and then time’s that by the number of football players there are and they never give back to there roots
    .
That is why Boxing is the peoples sport it always gives back.
    Think about that one.

      >What’s your point? You saying boxing gives back to the people, then ask what have they done? Does not make sense. Please, don’t try and distort my comments by turning them into a point of argument. If you want to state that boxers from the Eastern Cape hav don nothin for their communities, then go ahead. That’s an entirly different issue. What does that hav to do with this? Cheers
