Tommy Oosthuizen will now have back-to-back fights in March and April
When Florante Contes fell out of a tree in the Philippines, as he claimed he did this week, the impact on Golden Gloves’ March 3 tournament at Emperors Palace was significant.
Contes’ unavailability for his IBO title challenge against Hekkie Budler put a spanner in the works and forced a frantic runaround by Golden Gloves. In a fortuitous twist, however, the card has been strengthened with the inclusion of SA favourite Tommy “Gun” Oosthuizen.
The changes were announced at a media conference at Emperors Palace earlier today.
Oosthuizen will go in against top Australian, Cameroon-born Serge Yannick, who boasts a superb 14-1 record that includes defeats of world title challengers Jamie Pittman and Shannan Taylor.
Oosthuizen’s reputation has a negative spinoff, though, with top fighters increasingly pricing themselves out of the market rather than fronting up.
“That’s the problem with a hot prospect like Tommy,” explained Berman. “Guys want a fortune to justify the risk. As a consequence, I’ve had to shift Hekkie, while Luzuko Siyo will fight on the subsequent bill at Emperors. No-one wants to fight Tommy. We’re thus affected cost-wise and it impacts on others.”
Happily, Budler won’t have too long to wait. Berman has negotiated with the IBO to accommodate a non-title bout, to take place on Jeff Ellis’ tournament at Emperors Palace in late March.
And Siyo won’t have long to wait either, with Berman pledging to finance a fight for the SA flyweight champion in the Eastern Cape and also at Emperors, probably in June.
Notwithstanding the dramatic turn of events, Oosthuizen will still feature as the headliner on a bill in the US in April, subject to him winning on March 3.
“I’ve kept [US promoter] Lou Di Bella appraised of developments,” said Berman. “What’s more, he has extended Tommy’s contract for a further three years. The sky really is the limit.”

This is not fair!!!
Budler is always training, If I you take a drive at night you will see him do his road work and during the day find in at his club. But and always gets half handed deals.
Is this because of his manager or just because of his luck?
As I recall he was set to go to Germany! That was not to be, Now this?
Come on while you say no one wants to fight Tommy you seem to find him an opponent out of the hat.
As much you believe Tommy is loved I think Budler is liked as much if not more.
Love you Champ!

This is now a huge risk. Article states that the fight in America is on subject to him winin in March! What if he wins a 12 round bloodbath? Will he stil get into the ring a month later? Doesn’t sound too good at all. 1 basic rule in boxing is don’t look past your next opponent. When you look for an easy ko win, you normally get into trouble. The further the fight goes, the more anxious you becom and try to go for too much too early. It then becomes a strugle. Was there no other top bout that could hav replaced Budler? Or could Budler not been found a different opponent. There are a few good SA boxers in that dvision who could hav steped in easily. Well, if we askin Tommy to fight twice in 2 months, let’s wish him the best. Cheers

Dilo, Budler is being protected. There are a dozen boys down in the Eastern Cape just waiting to get there hands on Hekkie. Even a rematch with Gideon would have been great.

The oke Tommy is fighting is good but not great, he lost to Micheal Boilling who lost every round against ISaac Chilemba, and Tommy and Isaac drew! I know this is not how boxing works but it is an indication of his skill and talent!
Tommy should win this if he doesn’t mess up, as I see it they both only have +-5weeks of camp so it should go to the beter boxer (Tommy) but this is boxing, anything can happen…

And one more thing ‘no mercy.’ Tommy’s opponent, Serge Yannick did lose to Michael Bolling although, Bolling had already had nine fights in his career as a pro and Yannick only four at the time. Let’s also remember that Yannick had close to 170 amatuer fights, Tommy approximately 40.

I would like to see Tommy against Michael Bolling as well … that was the fight that was supposed to happen, but got handed to Isaac after Tommy’s accident.

>Flo will win easily this time. If he doesn’t, I will eat my words, but he was too good just to go bad over 2 fights. As long as he keeps his hands up there shouldn’t be a problem. A very small percentage of boxers hav been koed by a body punch, so he should protect his head at ALL times. Cheers

Shit everyone is getting tickets!!!
I think Flo should win as he hits very hard and Bruwers takes a lot of punchs, but Bruwer is no walk over, he is THE tuffest boxer out and had (don’t know if he still has) a lot of skill…
Joey and Taliwe is going to be fight of the night!!!
January 31, 2012 at 2:19 pm, Jono B said:
The fight of the night is going to be Joey VS Taliwe, these two guys are good boxers.
Joey is a counter puncher where Taliwe is a come forward fighter.
Taliwe is the WBC Inter champion for a reason,so all I can say let the best man win.
They are the future of South African Junior light weight world champions.

The 3rd of March bill is going to be great with the like’s of Flo vs Daniel.
Flo is going to give he’s best I am sure, on the other hand Daniel has been around for much longer and knows he’s way in the ring.
Power goes to Flo and smart goes to Daniel.
If Daniel come in fat and not ready Flo will eat him up alive in round 4 up wards.
Good luck to both.

I think Bruwer will most likely be a problem for Mr. Simba. My reason is that Flo is pretty much one dimentional, his best defense is his offense, and if his opponent realises that Flo can’t hurt him(as Danie found out) that seems to be the end of the road for Flo. Flo’s biggest set-back is also his greatest strength… Flo can punch, HE knows that, but he has other great qualities which he unfortunately has never used or exposed to us. What use has he made of his personality, character, mental strength and speed and endurance that everyone keeps mentioning? What great potential. He needs to find out what to do when boxing goes past the Knoock Out. Flo looks for a KO and when he’s unsuccessful he fails. Tommy Oosthuizen adapts to circumstances and looks different in every performance, depending on what is expected from him. That’s an awesome quality for a boxer!
Another Boxing Lover.

Mr Berman !! thank you so much for the tickets ! Really appreciate it ! Will contact Shona swiftly.
I’m a huge fan of Flo … and was very disappointed with his 2 losses. Punch, this boy can really punch. BUT, as soon as his opponent comes down on him like a ton of bricks, he forgets all basics, and that’s where he gets hurt.
Hopefully, coming down in weight will help him, and I’m sure that Harold would’ve worked on his defence in the past few months.
As The Iron mentioned above, Tommy adapts to every single opponent. When the opponent is easy, (if there is ever such a thing), he clowns around and entertains the crowd. But when the opponent is more difficult, he focusses more, get’s his head down, and gets down to business. Making him very versatile.
However, I would still LOVE to see a real great Knock-Out from my boytjie !!!!
