Joey Stiglingh, left, would be an obvious candidate for a lightweight tournament
Not content with crowning one of the continent’s best cruiserweights, Rodney Berman has now set his sights firmly on the lightweights.
A flurry of interest from countries throughout Africa, not to mention the good quality of lightweights that abound, has convinced him to expand Golden Gloves’ tentacles.
“If you look at the ABU rankings, the lightweights are particularly strong,” says the Golden Gloves boss.
Berman is giving serious thought to perhaps even staging the tournament in another African country with up to 24 fighters in the mix. To this end, he will be inviting a number of boxing commissions and government officials from countries like Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya to the Emperors Palace show on June 6 where the Super Eight will be in full flow.
“Of course I will include South Africans too,” said Berman.
Obvious candidates that spring to mind include Jasper Seroke, Joey Stiglingh and Godfrey Nzimande.
Perhaps best of all is that the WBC have been informed of Berman’s plans, with executive member Mauricio Sulaiman saying “you can be sure the WBC will support it”.
▼ Meanwhile, Berman has awarded four pairs of ringside tickets to “Power at the Palace” (plus dinner) on March 3 to “No Mercy”, “Pierre”, “Dilo” and “Boxman”.
“I may not always agree with their comments, and it doesn’t always mean I’m right, but they are passionate fans and I want to thank them for their support,” said Berman.
They are to please contact Shona for arrangements (shona@mweb.co.za)

Thanks for the tickets but unfortunately i cannot accept it as it would expose my true identity and i would prefer to remain anonymous.Rodney how about throwing Mzonke Fana into the mix. Im sure he would’nt mind stepping up one weight class. Im sure he would grab the opportunity of re-establishing himself…just a thought.

I thought that Joey was a junior light weight boxer, not light weight?
So what does that mean if Joey wins or losses on the 3rd March, he will move up a weight division?
I think Grant fire ball should be put in the mix and see what happens there.

Thank for the tickets Mr Berman, wow, I really am Greatfull as I’ve never been ringside before!!!
I think the light weight division is perhaps the strongest division in SA, think just who can participate, JOEY, JASPER, JASON can pull some weight, FANA, those are just a few but guys like KAISER MABUZA can pull some weight, for money, why not!
Great idea, let’s see what happens!!!

Godfrey would be great to see, but would he not have to leave Nick in order to appear on a GGP show? Or are Du Randt and Rodney once again cordial?

Hi @Anton Boxbox Grant the fire ball, has the best team, reason he has signed with Brian and Brian is Golden Gloves, just a matter of time that we will see Grant in the ring.
For the other boys, who knows? This game is not what you know it’s WHO you know.

Rodney, seeing that BOXMAN does not want to reveal his true identity, I would love to have some ringside tickets to the palace and reveal my true identity, although it is not laced with infamy it is passionate about GG boxing.
Hope you feel fit to re-award them to myself or another suitable candidate.
Love live GG

I honestly cant see any decent names among all the names that Berman has mentioned. Joey is the only one that stands out for me and even he is still a novice on the world stage. If Kaizer Mabuzo fights on this tournament then it means Chris van Heerden was beaten by a light weight? I think Chris was lucky to win that one. We all know Kaizer is a junior welter and not a full blown welter. But I feel he out worked chris.
