The Gun” is Pure Pugilist!

Tommy “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen, who more and more fans are simply referring to as the “Gun”, has for weeks  been building up a healthy sweat in trainer Harold Volbrecht’s a gymnasium ahead of his scheduled 12-round IBO world super middleweight bout with 23-year-old champion Isaac “The Golden Boy” Chilemba.

Fight experts are already calling it the fight of the year and the challenger’s reputation as a puncher has made him the slight favourite, ahead of a bout anyone could win.

As for the 21-year-old Oosthuizen, this hawk-faced, 6’4’” southpaw puncher comes by his trade honesty. Tommy’s father Charlie held two SA professional titles during the late 1980’s and fashioned a record of 27-2-2, en route to lifting both the SA middleweight and light middleweight title.

An amateur for what trainer Volbrecht believes could not have been more than 30 fights, the Gun’, interest in the sport accelerated only after turning professional and now after 12 unbeaten bouts, with 8 knockouts, he is been looked upon as one of the most exciting and frightening hitters in the country.

Unmarried, Oosthuizen has won three titles in a year (2009); IBO Youth world light heavyweight, IBO Youth world super middleweight and WBA All Africa super middleweight title.

Accused of using his mitts both inside and outside the ring, although those allegations have never been substantiated, there is definitely something about this young athlete that reminds me of former world heavyweight champion Gerrie Coetzee.

Perhaps the cordial greeting and meaningful stare that tells you there is something extremely daunting about the Van Dyk Park resident, who one feels is never happier than when he’s fighting. Raised to the East of Johannesburg, (Boksburg), Tommy is one of three children and besides having a sister, he’s brother also boxed briefly as a professional.

    This is a match-up of unknowns…

Unknown 1 – Tommys’ scar tissue: After his accident he will have weakened facial tissue. If damaged, how will the blood affect Tommy?

Unknown 2 – Change in Isaacs life: He ha changed trainers and gyms and has hooked up with a trainer who I personally believe to be sub-par in Elias. How will this affect his preparation and strategy?

Classy i dont think Tommy needs to worry about his scar tissue because he will send Isaac and his sub-par trainer back to the dressing room before they land anything significant on him.

Do you all claim to know boxing or are you merely voicing opionion based on your support for a particular person. or are you completely objective?? Very surprised by your attack on me Britt. And I was labelled the Peoples Champ by others so it was not self done. Maybe one day I will tell yur the story.

Ok fellas, Isaac on points. I don’t think Isaac has the power to knock Tommy out but has a high work rate. i think he has settled nicely at the weight. Isaac has been in some tough fights and that will stand him in good stead, where I feel Tommy hasn’t had to many battles. On the night anything can happen, but looking at the boxers and their records I feel Isaac has it!

Besides Tommy’s pedigree, coming from a boxing family, he has K.O. power and is devastating when he lets those tommy guns loose. Tommy has proved in the past that he can also box. Remeber how he out box Jarret Lovett. As for Isaac he just does not have power to keep Tommy at bay for the full 12 rnds and he tends to tire in the later round. And then most importantly….the support team….Harold Volbrecht vs Elias (who?)Tshabalala….ENOUGH SAID!!!!!

Don’t underestimate the power of having the belt around your waistline. It instantly makes you a better fighter. Isaac has that belt and he is not going to give it up without a fight – Tommy must be ready because a Fight is exactly what he will be in for. Tommy is relatively untested and he is the one stepping up – not Isaac. Don’t let favoritism cloud your collective judgement – KO power and boxing pedigree aside, Isaac is a tough guy who can take a shot. I saw that sitting ringside for the Bolling fight. Isaac is difficult to hit and the way he crouches makes him a difficult target. Tommy standing 6″4 is going to have to be very very accurate and pick his shots. Tommy has no inside game and that is where the fight is going to be won or lost – on the inside!

No use to get personal guys. Facts are, every one will support their own favourites, always. Isaac will not be coming to the ring under-prepared, I actually think he’ll be in tip top shape.

And no champion will just stand back and get their title taken from them. However, Tommy is hungry to fight, he had his eyes on that specific title first, and now he’s coming to collect, WITH WHATEVER FORCE IS NECESSARY!!!

Partizan crowd here Stephen – personally I have changed my mind so many times about how this fight will go down. Initially I had a close split decision to Tommy, then I started thinking KO but now the more I think about it…I will not be surprised if Isaac out-thinks Tommy on the night.

There are so many variables in this one, its gonna be a terrific fight for sure.
